  • i have started going once a month for a few bits - i got avocados for 20p each rather than 79p elsewhere but they just take longer to ripen - you can't buy ripe and ready to eat like you can in m&s!!

i have also bought big bottle of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar at good price

have found some fruit ok but haven't tried meat as i tend to buy from butcher locally same with veg - try to go to local farmers market
  • Sorry you had a bad experience with Netto, Browntoa.

I prefer Netto to Aldi and Lidl anyday. All 3 of these stores are within a mile of each other but 16 miles from where I live so I tend to do a quick dash round all 3 once a month. Trouble is they usually have the start day of their weekly special offers on different days so I'm always unlucky with one or the other:eek:.

I was passing through another town recently and their Lidl was massive and newly built with a huge carpark. Good job as the store was packed. It's all swings and roundabouts I suppose as some branches will be grottier than others. Nobbled the guy as he was bringing out the new boxes of fruit and veg and he let me pick my superfresh stuff out of the full boxes as he was taking them off his trolly. They lasted ages. Luckily all my 3 locals are OK.

I go once a month to lidl for certain things too.

1.5 ltr carton orange juice - the best I've tasted
butter beans - so big and succulent, I'd never go back to any other brand
Printed toilet rolls - 2.99 for 10 really thick and soft
cherry/raspberry jaffa cakes - better than real jaffa cakes!
apple juice and grape juice - stock up when on offer for homebrew
and I can never resist their 70% chocolate - gorgeous

browntoa- i live in canterbury and i havent ventured inside the netto because i cant see the entrance! will bear in mind the toilet allyway and probably avoid it, lidl and aldi are much better imo.

pol - agree with you 100% re. the jaffa cakes and OJ

I just checked and the sausages I have are 74% pork, 6% apple for £1.79

I only go to Lidl if theres something in the weekly offers email that takes my eye - recently got some great cycling stuff for my dd and her family, and also garden stuff and all of these were great value.

I dont rate it as a food supermarket, I certainly couldnt do a weekly shop there although in fairness our local one isnt very big; last year they were selling really nice jam for 48p but last week it was 68p; thats almost a 50% price rise in less than a year! I'm wondering if they are not worried so much about low prices now as they have an established customer base?

dont have a local aldi or netto or the home saver, which sounds one of the best from posts I've read on MSE

I have really gone off Lidl since moving to London - it was much nicer in Yorkshire.

Aldi is by far the best of the cheap shops - they do some really excellent food for very reasonable prices, in my opinion.

I do like their continental meats and cheeses. The quality is good for the price compared to tesco's. dh likes their cheap coffee and their 500ml bottle waters are good value and taste nice. However their handwash (like the washing liquid) is RANK. I cannot describe how bad it smelt!

I have just discovered Aldi and I love it. I tend to alternate my supermarket shop between Aldi and Morrisons and it works for me. Their fruit is much better than anywhere else and their meat and ham and suchlike is lovely. I do like certain branded items and i just get those at Morrisons.

  • I go to Lidl to buy their sparkling/carbonated mineral water (1.5 litre/25p). My husband swears by its slow releasing bubbles and much prefers it to anything else.

I occasionally buy one of their gammon joints to cook for sandwiches if I happen to be in there buying water and it seems OK for the price.
