I think that if the family have been nice enough to pay for her travel/accomodation then she should be at least chipping in for her food/trips out etc. so I would say at least a few hundred. I would expect her mum to put some money towards her expenses as well though.

I agree - I really wouldn't assume that family would be responsible for food/drinks costs for her.

I would have thought 15 Euro a day reasonable, 210 Euro in total (or round it down to 200). No-one has mentioned excursions, who is expected to pay for them?

Thanks all, DH doesn't have any contact with the extended family but it's a good point that some should be given directly to the relatives. We were planning on paying £10 per week into her account until she goes (she's very good with money) but perhaps we should save it elsewhere and give it to her mum to apportion as appropriate.

We'd settled on £300, roughly £20 per day thinking that would cover her dinner/lunch and the odd ice cream/whatever but that the family would probably provide breakfast and wouldn't be asking for the cost of her cola if they bought a round of drinks.

DSD mentioned she needs £600/700 but I think she's overheard her older cousins, who work and are old enough to go clubbing, talking about what they'll need when the reality is she'll be spending her time with a slightly younger cousin doing more 'family' stuff (we hope!)

They aren't really into excursions, I think they spend their time at the beach or around the pool!

  • I would assume that the extended family would not be expecting any extras towards food and accommodation. They offered to take her on holiday - it would be a bit rude to then turn round and say 'Oh by the way, we need £200 towards the cost" . What happens if you don't have that kind of money?

If it was me and I wanted to take my daughter's friend on holiday for instance, it would be on the assumption that we would pay for everything. I wouldn't expect her to bring her own money - maybe a little money for gifts/souveners but that would be all. But, I would also have run it past mum and dad first, i.e. 'I would like to take Jane on holiday with us. Would that be alright?' That would give the parents a chance to ask the question about money before they made a decision.

I don't think it's a good idea to assume anything. She certainly wouldn't want to arrive in Spain with enough money for a few icecreams and then find out that her meals hadn't been covered.

  • Can your OH ask DSD's mum to have a conversation with the aunt who has offered to fund DSD's trip? If she is sharing a room with a younger cousin (who is presumably going anyway) then so far all she has funded are the flights. If she's expecting DSDs meals and food to be paid for then I'd agree an amount and give it directly to the aunt. Then a separate amount for DSD general spending.
MSE aim: more thanks than posts :j

Ideally it would be best for DH to ask her mum what the score is but communication is not his strong point!

I was often taken by my OH's family on holiday and visa versa when we were between the ages of 15 and 19.
For me i would take spending money that equated to about 15-20 pounds a day PLUS my parents would give my OH's parents enough for however many people to have a meal out on them (usually about 7-8, so roughly 150 pounds), i think in total i went on about 3-4 european holidays with them in this time frame.
This was 'paid back' when we took my OH to visit my family in Thailand for 3 weeks.
