getting money back from talk talk

Hi

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this is standard procedure? I signed up for a contract with talk talk and changed my mind after less than 24 hours of setting it up. I chose to pay line rental for the year in one payment for which I gave my debit card details. When I phoned to cancel I was told the payment would go through and I would receive this money back as a cheque in the post. I enquired as to why the payment could not be stopped or why the money could not be replaced back into my account however he insisted this could not be done. Is this correct?
