The Windows 8 version is determined by its license key, not that of the previous OS. So if the version you're getting is the upgrade version, that is what it will remain. You will still only be able to install it on one machine only.

I presume you mean one machine at a time?

You are given the opportunity to download and burn an ISO from the upgrade assistant. I think you have to pick the "keep nothing" option.

That's right, it doesn't look like it offers initially but after you go through the steps it will start a download and when finished it gives the option to produce a USB memory stick with the build or to create an iso from the data it's downloaded. If you create the iso you can use the Windows 7 USB iso tool to put the iso on a USB stick.

From a new Windows 7 PC (bought since June) you can get a discount code and it's only £15.

Where's the details of this and how do you go about getting a discount code?
Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.

I was never given this option at anytime, but mayby this option is given if you do not chose the backup DVD purchase

If you installed via the upgrade advisor, you had the option to Install now, Install later from your Desktop, or Install by creating media. Selecting the latter option then prompts you to choose between saving to a USB flash drive, or saving an ISO file to burn to a DVD later. Easy to miss though if you're concentrating on just running the installer.

When I upgraded from an XP PC (actually on more than one), I didn't get the option to burn an ISO to DVD. There are ways around it though.

i was only given the options Install now, Install later from your Desktop, but even the price of a decent flash drive locally would cost more than the 8.99 for the backup DVD which was promised in 3 to 5 day.

but it was daft that it took me to email their USA ceo to get any action and the DVD had to be sent from Germany via UPS to me in the UK. I was not expecting any sort of refund i just wanted the DVD paid for.

2 things that annoy me about W8

    1. you've heard this all before; a dislike of the way Microsoft have integrated the old interface with the new; its a mess. Easy fix is to use classic shell
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/classicshell/

    2. with Windows7Pro XPmode was included to let you run those old apps that wouldn't run in W7.
Windows 8 Pro doesn't include XPmode. So I tried Hyper-V (Microsofts VM in W8). Couldn't install. Then I tried VirtualBox (Oracle's VM).
Quite impressed. If you need to run any old apps under W8 try this.

    EDIT. virtualbox is here https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
(don't forget the extension pack with usb support)
