Gas meter readings increasing hugely through day when gas OFF! Huge spikes.

how often does the remote unit update, instantly or delayed, ie could it be playing catch up? do you have an electric smart meter too - if so is that working, and figures matching the meter? Do the neighbours have them?
If gas is moving through the meter, then you should be able to hear it, so you need to find a time when the meter is going up, nothing is on (including frost protection), and listen
when you put it on for an hour - are you doing this using a timer - could you be hitting the advance or continuous button on the timer instead of the +1 hour!!

Remote updates almost instantly. Both services use same smart meter, both displaying, electric normally, next door doesn't have one yet.
Couldn't hear anything going through meter earlier, can't now when it is on.
Putting on for an hour using timer, ie setting up as if it is a new option, our meter lets us set up for twice during the weekday and same at weekends.
Put on timer to come on at 1pm until 2pm, been on for 15 mins and shows an increase of 3p, if I had turned it on manually it would have been a couple of pounds according to our other figures.
There is obv a fault so I will carry on putting it on using the timer until we can get an engineer out.
Could be worse, some don't have any heat at the minute and it is due to fall to -14 on Sunday here  according to http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/0 -
doesn't make sense that a timer, which is just a switch can increase gas usage depending on whether you press a button, or it presses the button for you effectively. Surprised you can't hear any gas flow at the meter when it's on.
3p for 15 minutes is low, unless your house is upto temperature.!!

Exactly!
The heating was on all night so I suppose it wouldn't take much too heat it but nothing would surprise me regarding the cost after this lot!0 -
Did the engineer come round today? Any news?0

Well, as it had started behaving itself ie was working fine when coming on if using the timer and not being put on manually, we booked the annual inspection as was going to ask why it was doing this, as it seemed ok, first available date FEB.
Tonight it has started doing it again, ie £ rapidly increasing and units going up when not on timer or manual ie off!0 -

I did suggest that to my husband and he said there was a problem getting the pilot light back on when we had something done a while ago.
He is worried that if we do that we won't be able to get it back on again and be without heating.
After saying that the service engineer didn't mention it when he came to service it last year.
I did have a thought, regarding the gas outlet on the outside wall, we have galeforce winds at the minute and they are blowing towards it, could the wind be having an effect on the pilot light making it struggle? The heating may not be switched on but the pilot light is constantly lit isn't it.0 -
Problem found, thank Gawd!
Had the engineer out who rang the smart meter billing dept.
Seems that there is a fault with the outside meter which they can see at their end, says it is classed as a passing unregistered gas fault.
They can see that the prob started on the 10th Jan so they will arrange to get the meter changed (this one is less than 2 years old) and estimate our bill on previous readings etc.
Luckily the meter went up by 7 units in half and hour that the engineer was here, without anything being on except for the pilot light.
We have had the heating/radiators on for 3½ hrs today and it says we have spent £15.91 worth of gas!
At least I will be in a better mood now that I know they are sorting it.
Think I will go and put the heating on and make the most of it as they are estimating the usage.
Phew!
Now to sort out the extra pounds I must have put on by eating chocolate.
Strange how we go for the sweet stuff when stressed out.0
