Will do but I guess you meant dry throats :D.

I have set them at 2.5, off to try and get some sleep without thinking about the damned thing.

We have cover with british gas so my husband is going to request an engineer tomorrow.

Up to £13.43 for the day now, showing as used 35 units during the day, not.

:rotfl: Yes. In my sad defence, it is late.:D

OMG We pay be dd and don't pay that a week.

I know, we pay by DD and don't pay anything like that.

We have loft insulation, cavity wall, double glazing etc......

God knows when we they will be able to send an engineer out, I bet they are all out mending broken boilers because of the cold.

Oh well, off to bed, should be interesting to see what is shows as being the total for being on all night.

Not much help but at least you spotted it early on. Good luck.

I had read on some forums that there is a frost stat thingy that kicks in if the temp gets below a certain level, even if your boiler is switched off.

So, as it was -3 overnight we left the heating on all night on low, hoping that was the reason for the surges, ie it wouldn't have to keep switching itself on because it was already on.

    Fail!

I checked at five past midnight to see the system set back to zero ie 0.00p spent.

From five past midnight until 6.40am when my husband checked, it had used 24 units and said £6.40 used.

We left it on until it was due to be switched off by the timer ie 8.50am.

From just after midnight until 8.50am it said we had used a total of 33 units, £16.34 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

From 8.57am to 9.03am 2 units in 6 minutes .

On the bright side we do have plenty of hot water :o.

We have been keeping photos and logging times etc and my husband noticed that the only time it seemed to be normal was when it first came on when using the timer and was switched off using the timer.

So, I have set it up to come on, on the hour and turn back off again 10 mins later to see what happens then.

I tried this at 9am and from a couple of minutes after 10 and off at 10.05am, this seems to have worked and the reading has stayed the same and cost hasn't increased (yet!), fingers crossed.

He is going to speak to an engineer later when home from work.

Anyway, besides asking for advice here, I thought it would be handy to let people know of the situation should it happen to anyone else.

MSE is always a place I search for other peoples experiences first before anywhere else.

    Stay warm folks.

    ;)

Depends what you mean by boiler 'switched off'. All modern boilers and programmers have a frost 'stat that kicks in at around 5C, to prevent the possibililty of the CH circuit freezing This will override both the timer and the room 'stat settings. However if your boiler is 'switched off' in the sense of 'disconnected from the electricity supply' then obviously the frost 'stat won't operate.
Impossible to comment further unless you give make and model of boiler (and external programmer if fitted).
How cold is the room with the boiler in it overnight?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Heating and water were switched off at control panel on the wall.

The boiler is an Ideal RS50 about 14 years old, it is situated in the kitchen and the lowest temp the smart meter has shown has been 17 deg c.

As I said, we left everything on overnight so I take it there wouldn't be a need for a frost stat to kick in.

I have just been to check the reading again as it has been on 3 times now for 10 minute periods, ie on the hour and off 10 mins later and the usage hasn't changed.

What the smart meter isn't showing is the usage from one minute past midnight until it was turned off at 8.57am, another photo taken.

So if I understand you correctly, the meter is sometimes recording consumption when you are not consuming any and isn't recording consumption when you sometimes are?

Are you sure you are looking at the correct meter?
If so, then contact your supplier.

Well it def has been recording consumption when not consuming anything, a huge spike showing on the smart meter which suddenly.

It has bars showing on the smart meter for the 10 min blocks that I have set up, not on the kw usage yet as they will prob have to all add up before it shows extra.

The outside gas meter reading is corresponding to the reading on the smart meter in the kitchen.

We asked the cs agent to put info on record when we rang the other day.

Will be contacting later to get engineer out, glad we have cover.

Are you taking these reading from a remote unit, from the internet, or from the actual meter?

when the meter is registering use, and nothing is switched on, can you hear gas moving through the meter

From the smart meter in the kitchen and the outside gas meter, not sure what you mean by gas moving through the meter.

Just been outside, opened box to check and can't hear anything but it timed not to come on at the minute.

It seems to happen when we switch the system on manually, it doesn't appear to be happening (for now) when it comes on using the timer.
