Regarding using HMV vouchers in Waterstones, your guide states that they can't be used. However, I was able to use some old HMV vouchers in Waterstones a few days ago. Waterstones told me that if the voucher mentions Waterstones on the back (i.e. the vouchers were issued when the stores were owned by the same company), they will still honour them as payment/part-payment in Waterstones.
  • Here's a question. If you bought a gift card for HMV in another retailer eg Tesco as stated above and then couldn't use it in HMV, would this not fall under the SOGA as the goods you purchased were not fit for purpose or as described ?

Paper vouchers from the years when HMV and Waterstones were same company should be okay at Waterstones. Electronic vouchers (plastic) were never available to use in both stores.

Probably a silly question but does "gift vouchers" just mean instore gift vouchers, or does it include online credit? If it affects online credit, can you spend what's already in your online account, or does it just stop you from adding more credit?

There's no harm in trying. I'd do it quickly though, before they take the site down (or if they do, rather).
  • I have an order outstanding from before Christmas but from pure points. Don't suppose I'll get that now - at least I haven't actually lost any money though :(
  • I have just contacted my bank to ask about chargeback and they say as yet they are unaware that HMV are not accepting gift vouchers and also that as I purchased a voucher and received it then I got what I paid for? Clearly I was not expecting to keep a bit of plastic and did expect to receive goods at some point. They advised to ring back in a few days when they have more info.
  • My 12 year old son is devastated he has been saving hmv vouchers since his birthday in September and has £90 to buy some long awaited sky lander giants and game, we had not had a chance to get into town yet :(
We will not be buying vouchers for any stores ever again, we have given the store our money in good faith and they should honour them while still trading in my opinion.

I rang Amex this morning to see what they could do about the £150 vouchers I bought from an offer they advertised just before Xmas (20% off!). The nice person on the other end said they already had a number of calls on the issue this morning and they were in the process of deciding how to deal with it. They will either ring me back this afternoon or tomorrow morning with more information.

Will report back when I hear from them.

They are not trading currently - Deloitte are administering all of HMV's transactions - not HMV itself.

Register as a creditor with deloitte to al least get some return for it, or as with comet they may decide to accept gift cards at some point - but only if they think it is preferential for the creditors.

A friend returned a faulty DVD set last week but has not received a replacement. Does he have any opportunity get something - even a different product?
