Cost of replacing clutch on a Golf Mk5?

Firstly..you have in that car what is generally acknowledged to be one of the best diesel engines in terms of reliability fitted to a diesel car the old VW PD engine lump. They go for ever and are capable of huge mileages, are pretty good on fuel the only downside compared to the latest engine fitted to the Golf's is that they are a bit noisy on tick over. They are one of the last diesel engines not to have a diesel particulate filted fitted which can cause problems and cost a lot of money to replace.
You could buy another car with 30k on the clock and find a few months later that the clutch needed replacing
I'd check out a few small independent local garages ask around from neighbours for recommendations for good local garages and ask their opinions on your clutch before having it done. Clutches normally give a lot of warning before failing such as slipping on hills or underloadThe Early bird may catch the worm ...but its the second mouse that gets all the cheese!0 -
Either sell it with known fault or PX or do it properly like mike_the_bike say's....
I would expect the DMF might need replacing and if it doesn't it will soon.
The DMF is joined to the engine at one end and the clutch at the other... you need to take them both off to change the clutch anyway.
Considering the labour cost in stripping down and putting back together (it can't be more than 10 mins to actually fit the clutch or clutch and DMF its getting the car stripped to that point where the labour comes in) its not worth just getting the clutch done unless the DMF really looks like new! (and it won't at 90k miles)0 -
Ok, will keep that in mind. Many thanks for your replies.0
