Apparently the clutch on my 2005 Golf needs replacement, although I can't really tell as I've become used to it and can't really feel any problem. (to me it drives perfectly ok, so not sure how urgent it is).

Anyone can give me an idea of the cost..?

I've been thinking for a while about changing cars as this one has 2 doors and I'd really like a 4-door one, and I'm not sure if this is a good moment...

You can get an online quote online that includes everything, parts, labour VAT etc.

    They also provide a 2 year / 20k warranty

The clutch on my Xsara cost £350 and was ready to be picked up 4 hrs after i dropped it off

The clutch kit itself is no more than £140 (depending if VAG or 3rd party, skoda dealers are good for VAG parts) the rest would be labour (around 150-200)

Sorry, meant to specify the engine but forgot.. it's a 1.9 TDI, manual gearbox.

I think I'll do it if it's < £500, but last visit to the garage was around that just because of the ESP sensor, so I'm a bit scared...

The car hasn't had any other problems since I bought it in 2009.

How did you come to find out it needs changing? You say you can't feel anything wrong with it and usually you do when they need doing.

What do you mean by 'apparently'. They are not time related like a cam belt.

I started noticing the clutch slipped every now and then about 2 years ago, but it's been ok since then (ok for me at least). On the last visit to the garage they said it needed replacement, they didn't say how urgent it was and at that moment I didn't ask as I had just spent £500 and didn't want to think about it.
  • Your Golf will have a Dual Mass flywheel fitted (DMF) and quite frankly you would be daft not to have that replaced at the same time as the clutch as if it fails (and they do) most of the labour to do the clutch would have to be done again. Out of interest what mileage does your Golf have on it?..I suspect you are looking at around £600-£700 at an independent garage to have clutch and DMF

    Mileage is around 90k.

Do you think I should replace it now or is it safe to wait till I notice something..? Is there a risk like with the cam belt?

In my head I had already decided I would change cars if the next visit to the garage was around £1000... then I started thinking if it's £500 it's ok.. now £700 not sure what to do!!!
