Hi,

I was involved in a single car accident last night in the ice. Everyone is ok, as this is my first insurance claim i would like some advice. Might not be the best place to ask but i have always found this forum very helpful.

Firstly i was at fault, and i will loose my no claims bonus. I did have one passenger who is making a compensation claim against me. I believe this is probably fraudulent as i am fine, and the accident was drivers side. I dont think there is much i can do about this.

The RAC man said the car is possibly a write off, i dont know where i would stand with this. The car is 8 months old and finance with Gap RTI. Invoice price 19,100, value today around 15,000, finance ballance 14,300, excess 850.

Ill post some pictures of the car but the obvious dammage seems to be:

drivers side alloy wheel
tyre
drivers side wing
bonet no longer flush
front skirt/bumper
fog light
wheel buckled under arch (not driveable, possible axel/drivetrain/steering dammage too)
possible suspension dammage
brake fluid lights on (brake dammage?)
steering wheel airbag + steering wheel
pedels dropped away
curtain airbag drivers side
seat airbag drivers side,
passenger dashboard airbag + dashboad as one peice
cracked windscreen from passenger airbag
seat belt tentions
+ any other non visable dammage

Car is a 2012 audi a3 sport TFSI

Did you buy the car from brand new eg you're the first registered owner and how long have you owned it for.

Whiplash symptoms normally show the next day not the same day...
  • Your passenger sounds like a good mate.

    Car was brandnew, registered 30/04/2012.

Cant say hes a friend anymore. Claim is definatly fraudulent, as i got a phone call this morning to see if he could "add" people onto the claim. Of course i told him where he could shove that idea.

You really want this written off especially since you have GAP insurance. The worst outcome is they repair it.

As for your passenger their claim will have little effect your going to be paying for this for 5 years through increased insurance premiums anyway.

Once it has been written off you might want to buy the salvage back.

The good news is assuming your not with one of the Admiral group of companies or a really cheap and cheerful company. Your Insurer will arrange a replacement brand new model of your car if the cost of repairs are more than 60% or 70% of the new price (Check your policy as different Insurers have different percentages).

If you tell us which Insurer you're with we can tell you what percentage your Insurer uses.

You have a very high excess, unless you're receiving a very good discount for carrying this amount of excess you've messed up there.

The adding people to the claim is because the claims company have either suggested this or he's that dodgy he's thought of it himself. I recommend you report this to your Insurers as there's a good chance he may well try and add other "passengers".

If you have an accident in the future, try and take photos of your car from different angles, the passengers etc etc and do the same for any other cars involved

My thoughts aswell, I would probably go for a 1 year free insurance deal on a corsa or something. I'm 21 and insuring an audi after this would be seriously expensive. I was hoping to post images of the dammage for everyone to see.

(Not sure what this is, but looks broken)

(Not flush compared to passenger side, probably repairable
  • insurer's repairer has just pcked up the car. His face said it all, good likely hood of write off.

Would insurance new for old apply as its less than 12 months since first registration?

I'm no expert by any means but wouldnt have thought it would be a write off. Really sorry to see it in that state though - I'd be inconsolable!
