Just wondering what people do? I used to reconcile them all with my statements but mistakes seem to be so rare that I don't think it's worth the bother. I'm sure that credit card companies tell you that you must keep them, but I think that's a counsel of perfection.

Throw them away immediately. Life's too short and mistakes are rare.

Keep them for a short while then throw them away if no obvious discrepancies arise.

Keep them all and reconcile them with your statements when they arrive.

Keep them all in a box or somewhere but never do anything with them.

  • I keep all of those that I might need in the case of faulty goods say to get a refund.
Otherwise after the amounts have gone through my account I shred them.

Yeah, I think that's the best approach. I used to waste so much time checking them all. Maybe best to store them in date order so that the oldest ones are at the back and you can throw away the new ones from the front as statements arrive. Trouble with throwing them all away straight off would be if there was something on the statement that I didn't recognise and I needed to look at them to work out what it was.
  • I input them on to my phone which automatically syncs up to my accounts and then throw them in the bin, unless for an item that is large and need for warranty in which case it goes in my random warranty draw after inputting. I reconcile what's on my pc balance against the current balance online (don't use statements any more).
I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

    I love my job

Keep for at least a year (guarantees, accounting, etc.) and then shred the receipts and the statements.

As I pay via DD and receive a mailed Statement I keep the statement and the receipts in the pre paid envelope for a year.

    Keep until reconciled:
    • old-fashioned manual imprint slips (rare)
    • foreign transactions
    • refunds
    • restaurant where server may have added a tip*
    Otherwise ditch

    * Tips are always cash.

You keep the credit card slip rather than the receipt? Would have thought the receipt is more useful.

Personally, bin them straight away and keep the receipts for large ticket items
