Connection of Utilies in Repossession
My son has just completed on a house which has no utilities on because it was a repo.
How does he start to get Gas, Elec & Water reconnected? There is no evidence in the house of the previous supplier and he has no idea of usage so we can't seem to get a quote online.

You can use estimated/average kWh figures to get estimates of cost, for the comp sites just use any tariff as the 'existing' supplier.
You can't choose your water supplier, youj have to use the regional supplier.
Are the gas and electricity meters still in place? If so they will have serial nos.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Did he buy the property with services connected?
If not, he should have investigated the cost (and availability) of connecting services before offering a price.
Normally it's a simple case of flicking the switch or turning the isolation valve ... but I would urge you to urge him to get a professional in as he clearly doesn't understand and doing so could be extremely dangerous.
If services are connected, then a google search will bring up how to identify who the suppliers are.
I think finding the cheapest quote for energy (once he has a supplier) would be the least of his worries at present. But if/when he gets the time, I suggest you point him in the direction of this MSE article

Yes, the services were there (central heating etc) but as is the norm (so I understand) with properties that have been repossessed they were all disconnected when the property was handed back to the mortgagees.0

You can find out who your electricity supplier is by phoning your local electricity company. Since I don't know where you live I cant say who that will be. For Gas do the same thing, but phone the gas distributor in your area - you could try this number - 08706084524. Once you have established who the suppliers are, read your meters and get a witness to verify them, then ring the suppliers to set up an account. They will also arrange for supplies to be connected if they are currently turned off.
Water should be more simple, I reckon you just need to find the stop !!!! and turn it onIf a man does not keep pace with his companions, then perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away. thoreau0 -
You need to clarify 'disconnected'. Are the services actually capped/cut off?

You can probably find out who the registered supplier is using the online enquiry form here

I would imagine that they will have simply removed the fuse from the electric meter, switched off the gas & water etc so it shouldn't be a major drama to get them back on quickly & without great expense.0 -
On a repossession they normally disconnect the meter, you'll need to go with the last nominated provider. Often they will credit search the individual and offer a suitable meter from there, sometimes there is a security deposit payable, which after 12 months can be refunded. Provided no debt etc0

Central heating is not a service.
Services refers to gas, electricity, water, and sewerage.
Brief details are usually included in the sellers details (caveat emptor) and more detailed in the house survey (although I find it often recommends a specialist survey for each is undertaken. Ker-ching!)0 -

Yes, I understood what services meant. I was trying to convey ( in answer to another poster) that the property had previously had services connected because the central heating was there. Because it is a repo no details beyond "sold as seen" exist. Caveat Emptor applies of course, but the purchase price was well under valuation so he has got a bargain. Hopefully there will be no issues, but we realise that cannot be guaranteed.:D0 -
Impossible to advise further without access to the property to inspect what has been done. If someone's been in and ripped out all the copper piping and cabling (hardly unusual in repo's)then obviously you'll need more than just reconnection! No free lunch, and no free laptop0
