Moved from Orange to BT

I got my MAC from Orange (no problem there) and passed it on to BT who completed the changeover on 14 Nov.
Orange now tell me that they received confirmation on 29 Nov that the migration code was used and that my 14 day notice period started then so I still owe them for the period 14 Nov to 13 Dec.
Is this really how the system works? Should BT have informed Orange as soon as I passed on the MAC?
If I moved from one gas supplier to another I wouldn't expect to pay them both for the same period.
