Gcse Study Leave

Options
Hi

My dd has been told by her school that as of two years ago students no longer have study leave prior to gcse's.

Does anyone know if this is correct and whether their school has a different policy?

Thanks

Sue

I did my GCSEs in 1995 and we didn't get any study leave at all then (or for A-level come to think of it). I think it depends on the school. Are they offering structured revison sessions at the school prior to the exams?

Last year when the exams started my daughter only attended to sit her exams.

Daughter No 2 is taking her GCSE's this year and her first exam is next Thursday but I believe she only goes to sit exams after End May.

We didn't. Study leave = the days when you don't have an exam.. so if you have an exam on the first day of the exam period you have no study leave. This was back in 2002.
  • Hi
As it happens my 16 year old DS gave me a study leave letter this morning to sign:

"It is customary at this time to give a period of study leave to pupils in Year 11 who are shortly to sit their 'GCSE' examinations.

I should like to inform you that the study leave this year will commence on Wednesday 16th May 2007. Naturally staff will be available for consultation by pupils should any problems arise during this time.

I would be grateful if you would indicate below your agreement to your son/daughters studying at home from the 17th May in the run up to the examinations."

I live in Pembrokeshire and as far as I'm aware this has always been the case here (okay since I sat my gcses in 1989!!)

Our leave started the day the exams started. I was lucky and didnt take the subject that was on the first day. But others obviously took this subject and so had to go in and hence got no leave.

I think it's a school thing. DS1 and 2 have had to give evidence of a revision plan, and completed all coursework, somehow they've managed it.

but I know at my nephew's school some pupils got it and some didn't!

Okay I'm in Scotland, but for my Standard Grade exams (equivelant of GCSE), study leave started on the first day we had exams (ie, no time off prior to the first exam at all).

Doing Highers this year (equivelant of A-Levels) and study leave starts on the day before the first exam.

i did my gcses 2 years ago in 2005 and at my school (the brit school) we finished around May time and had a couple of weeks to meet with teachers for revision lessons if we wanted to. ( i didn't take up the opportunity because i was glad to finally get some time off! i still passed all of my gcses with a-c though!)

ANYWAY, after that we only had to go in for our exams and as far as i know that's still what happens. i spose it depends on how nice the school is and whether they are concerened about keeping a high score of people getting good grades.

Study leave taken away cos you know 90% of the kids won't use it (effectively)!

They should be doing structured exam prep in school during that time. You could talk to the tutor and see if there is any leeway but if its school policy then thats that really!
