Ford Fiesta: missing parts when purchased

Hi all. My wife bought a second hand Ford Fiesta from a well-known car dealer (unsure if I'm allowed to name the company) 4 months ago. The car had both a missing rear light reflector, the boot tray and the manual. At point of sale, the salesman said he would be sure to get all things in and fitted in a matter of weeks. We should have said we'd buy the car once all things had been replaced but my wife simply couldn't wait as she had no means of getting to and fro work and had to buy the car then and there.

After a number of emails to the salesman, we've still not received the missing parts and the manual - he simply keeps saying he's on it and it will be with him soon.

I know these aren't important parts but it's annoying not to have them (especially the manual) so is there anything we can do/say so he'll take more proactive action, such as mentioning the sales of good act etc or do we just have to wait it out? Thanks for any assistance on this matter.

You don't say if this "Well known dealer" is actually a Ford agent or not

If it is a Ford agent, visit their Parts Dept. and order the missing parts, (Chances are they won't have all the items on the shelf, but they will order them in - In which case tell them you will collect all the items when they have them all in)
When you go to collect the items and are asked for payment, that's when you refer them to Car Sales office.

Ok, thanks for that. Yes, this company is an authorised Ford dealer/agent.

Are you sure we can do this though as it sounds slightly devious on our part? Thanks.

Do not even think about ordering new parts unless you are prepared to pay for them. Doing as suggested just makes you liable for their cost (even if only the 10% handling fee for returned goods) and doesn't get you any further forward.
Stop emailing/texting/phoning. Go in and demand he gets it sorted (if promised) and they will simply swap out the parts from someone elses future pride and joy.

Panic Not - I successfully used this ploy to get hold of a missing part for a 2nd hand Peugeot purchased from a main dealer, after 8 weeks of promises from the Sales Dept

Remember that the salesman, employed by the dealer has made a verbal, legally binding contract on behalf of the dealer to supply these parts - the fact you have used a different avenue to get that promise fulfilled, does not leave you open to any legal redress or demands by the dealer

You clearly are barking dogshome. The verbal offer? Go ahead, pin that one down. Additionally all departments of dealerships (AC?) are compartmentalised cost centres. If sales buy something from the parts department or service, it comes from their profits not the universal biscuit tin. That is why they will continue to ignore the OP until they pitch up and demand their rights.

Yes, all dogs bark - But this is the dog who got his promised bone.

Of course large dealerships operate their Depts as seperate Cost/Profit centres
with inter billing, but where do you suppose the Sales floor are going to get these promised parts from, other than the Parts Dept.

They'll probably scavenge them from another car and hope the next person doesn't notice, which is how I got the wrong mats with my brand new car.
  • usually a parts department wont order a part that needs to be ordered unless you pay upfront, thats the case with my local ford and others local ive been to when i have needed the part and its OEM dealer only specific.

i personally in this case would return to the dealer and ask to see the guy dealing with this "promise", when not saatisfied i will ask to speak to his manager, and get the promise in writing if the definately do not have those parts in stock and need to be ordered, usually parts like that are either next day or 3 working days.

They may not have a manual if it's a superseded model. Try online, some manufacturers allow you to download them.

They may be small parts, but the rear reflector is an MOT fail* so the fact it's missing makes the car (technically) unroadworthy. By selling it in that condition the dealer has committed a criminal offence. If the car happened to have a new MOT issued by them before sale then it's also a matter for VOSA.

It's unlikely you'll get anyone to actually act on it but get in touch, give them a date to have it sorted by, as promised, unless they want it reported.

*RFR is 1.5.1(a) "A reflector missing, insecure, obviously incorrectly positioned or does not face to the rear"
