I am on a Graduate Additions account with Barclays Bank. This includes phone insurance.

My iPhone 4S (bought for £500 from the Apple website) is 15 months old, and today, the lock button randomly completely stopped working (it no longer presses in, it is solid).

Apple will replace the handset in-store for £130, and Barclays Bank charge £75 excess, mostly likely to fix it (so my phone will be gone for at least a week).

If I used an iPhone repair services such as this, this or this (they charge, after my postage cost, around £50), do you think I'll still be covered by Barclays Bank's insurance?

I will be calling Barclays Bank when they're open again, which is hopefully at 09:00 tomorrow morning (will be a Sunday), but I thought I'd ask here beforehand so I can possibly gain some knowledge before I called them.

When sending via. Royal Mail, they ask if it's a phone. Presumably, this is to add their insurance when sending it, so I'm not to worried.

I presume "wear and tear" comes under "electrical or mechanical breakdown", so it will incur the £75 excess.

I would personally go the apple route - you know its going to work and you know if it doesnt they will do something about it.

I cancelled my insurance on my handset, as at the end of the day its only really losing the handset when insurance actually is a benefit.

Insurance also covers damaging the handset (dropping, water damage etc.). Apple will only replace it if something goes wrong with it that's their fault (such as this).

However, £130 is simply too steep for me considering it's only the lock button that's broken. I know they'd give me a new handset, but I'd rather pay a third of that just to repair the button itself if possible.
