anyone else think thread is going to another designer freezer thread, totally pointless.

    created in order to troll.

whyb bother buying the kindle if you already knew the tech would be superceded within a few months and come here and moan about it

Is it about technology changing, or our wants? It was good enough when it came out, so why is it not good enough now?

My Mother got one for XMas last year x1, novelty; gone, never to be seen again. Even though she broke one.

I believe it's simply technology for technologies sake, there is no need for it.

Billions of books donated to charity never make it to the shelves. They are sold by individual charity shops if they don't make the grade to be reused in the paper/rope/insulation industries, but at the price they get, it's peanuts. Any that pass the grade, you can buy from 25pence.

And really? The outlay to spend on these devices; vs the content you read? Is that Moneysaving? £80 on the device, get free books etc, that are available in the library, and people wonder why libraries are closing down.

It was the fact that when I went on holiday and was going to buy some books a charity shop that they were priced upwards of £2 that helped make my decision to buy a kindle. And I haven't looked back, I read a lot, I now don't have to worry about how to recycle or pass on my books, I simply delete when I am finished. I can have several books on the go at the same time easily too.

Calibre software is free and will back up and organise all your books and convert books that you get from elsewhere to the format for Amazon.

My kindle is one of my most treasured possessions.

Again, see my last post. I'm not talking about fine changes, and I'm talking about things which should have been in there from v1.

I wonder how people would have responded to an iPhone v1 withno touchscreen and no light .... Then for a version with a touchscreen a few months later and then one with light a few months after that....

My point is that in thisday and age , I'm pretty sure the greats brains of cutting edge technology can incorporate a touchscreen and a light from the first version....

But they obviously can't, if you read the reviews for the paperwhite they are dogged with light issues. I think they shouldn't have released the paperwhite model until they had sorted this out.
  • I am happy with my Sony that I have had for 2.5 years. I will keep using it till it stops working.

By choice I would use paper books, but I cannot visit a physical library often enough to keep up with my reading habit! I just have to sit on my laptop and download a few.

I buy physical books to take on holiday because I do not want to have my ereader near a pool.

As someone else said, charity shop books are way too expensive for the state of some of them. I can easily buy a new book for the same price off the market or online, if charity shops were cheaper I would buy from them.

At the moment if my ereader conked out I would probably get a Kobo Glo.

If you logically follow my argument, the point is why they didn't try to do it in the first version (which was only a few months earlier)...?

I don't remember knowing that it was going to be superceded by another version...where did I say that?

Infact, quite the opposite - as one of the earlier contributors said, they were saying a touchscreen version wasn't going to come out...and guess what happened within a few months...

Try reading and understanding what an OP is saying before making your own comments.

Like a pc, once you have bought it, you can guarantee there will be a better one in 3 or 4 months. Whereas with tablets or ebook readers it seems to be sooner.

    Not really,
the time difference between each kindle release has been about a year.
Apple is about the same apart from the silly ipad 4 release.
Intel releases every 1-2 years depending on your pov.

Kindle touch release was 28 sep 2011, Kindle paperwhite was 1 oct 2012. 1 year.

The light on the kindle is a weird one, I did not expect them to release something like that because its slighty against its eink that it should be like a book to read.
The touchscreen I still don't see the point, I have had a sony ereader with a touchscreen but I still prefer the physical keys on my kindle keyboard.

My opinion is that they did not really want a backlight on the kindle but were pressured by nook glowlight and from conventional LCD tablets, to have something in the "I like to read in the dark" niche

I have a Sony Reader and the touchscreen is brilliant and I couldn't do without it. So natural to swipe across to turn pages, and the double-tap to get the definition of a word is super-handy.

There's more to readers than Kindle. I like my Sony as it takes ePub as well as loads of other formats, so I'm not faffing with converting or tied to Amazon.

Back on topic.. I'll never feel the need to upgrade mine as the screen is fine and the device works. So, for me, any future 'advances' such as battery-draining lights or whiter screens aren't necessary.

    A pointless post IMO.

they released what they had at the time and you chose to purchase, you could have waited for the update that you knew was coming.

My wife has the original ( i think ,she has had it a while) and uses it daily, she never complains that it is a hassle to use etc etc

I have the original Kindle, and I also use it all the time. When the time comes to replace it I'll look at what Kindles are available then, but I'm not worried that I haven't currently got the latest model.

It's the nature of technology. As soon as you've bought something, within a few months an upgraded version is available. It's the way life is now.
