Show me any kind of Tech that hasn't improved with extra features over a short period of time.
Why did Apple bother making the iPhone 1, 2, 3, 4? They should have just gone straight to the iPhone 5.
To make money simple.
A little bit of progression but a lot of cunning scheduling.
Some of the tweaks are minimal others are more blatant.
Some will be parts obsolescence. Doesn't the new one need new cables/docks too?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

A few months after I bought my kindle, they released the Touch version, which was already out months earlier in the US.
Then, they released the version with a back light built in....
It seems that every few months they release a new version with one extra improvement.
Did they really not have the technology and foresight to build an all-in-one touchscreen and light into one version a year ago ?! I find it difficult to believe that it needed two generations of evolution to get a kindle with all these basic features.
As I don't wish to be milked again by the Kindle marketeers, is it now safe to buy a kindle with these latest features or does anyone think they'll bring out another new version with one more basic improvement which should have been done a year ago?
Thanks
It is the way they make money.
If you are old enough to remember "real" cameras they use to change the format every 5 years or so, 127 roll film, 126 instamatic,(with throw a way flash cubes), 110 , Disc. It is just the same with printers.
Hopefully improvements are made but as often as not it is cosmetic.
What is wrong with the one you have got?
P.S. I had a touch as a present for my birthday and was surprised how quickly it was superseded."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I've got a kindle touch; it works like a book with a built-in library and the ability to resize the font if I haven't got my specs on.
I don't need it to be faster, have a backlight, include a web browser, play audio or anything.
For me it does exactly what it needs to do.
My touch has a basic web browser under experimental applications."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

The Kindle Keyboard had an 'experimental' browser too...grizzly1911 wrote: »...surprised how quickly it was superseded.
The display tech hasn't changed much though.0 -
Sadly the same dilemma with all things techie. In a few month's time your latest gadget will be out of date no matter what you buy.
Incidentally the same evil Amazon have bought out a free upgrade to the Kindle touch to make it behave more like a paperwhite.
I've upgraded and it works fine!

Thanks Dave.
I will beetle of and do it.
It makes that £40 dedicated Amazon cover with integrated LED light powered from the Kindle battery, that I brought, seem a bit of a con.:("If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Is it about technology changing, or our wants? It was good enough when it came out, so why is it not good enough now?
My Mother got one for XMas last year x1, novelty; gone, never to be seen again. Even though she broke one.
I believe it's simply technology for technologies sake, there is no need for it.
Billions of books donated to charity never make it to the shelves. They are sold by individual charity shops if they don't make the grade to be reused in the paper/rope/insulation industries, but at the price they get, it's peanuts. Any that pass the grade, you can buy from 25pence.
And really? The outlay to spend on these devices; vs the content you read? Is that Moneysaving? £80 on the device, get free books etc, that are available in the library, and people wonder why libraries are closing down.0 -

Like many people who have responded, you missed the point .....
I am not complaining about new version of gadgets where truly new technology is added every so often... I am talking about simple basic technology which was within the grasp of the manufacturer a long time ago and yet wasn't incorporated.
Like I say, the I can't imagine that a touchscreen and light into was beyond the realms of imagination and fantasy one year ago......
It would be like a car coming out with no headlamps and having no door handles.... Only for there to suddenly be a version with those things in 6 months time....
And as for your Apple analogy... you've fallen into the trap yourself.... The answer is that yes, given the minimal changes between each version they could be have gone to iPhone 5 within 3 versions max... but because none of the changes were fundamental to the operation of of the device ( e.g touchscreen and a light), instead people aren't bothered about it."To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant." The one I have is the non touch version and is fiddly and time consuming to navigate....
And yes, you back up my point - I too was surprised how quickly a version with a light came out after the Touch version...."To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant." Amos Bronson Alcott0 -
I had an argument a few years back about the Kindle, when I said that I would buy one when they made a touch screen version, and they said that it was impossible. I've now got one and it works.
On the iPhone angle, the gadget has got faster and some of the finer details (eg. GPS) have been improved over the versions.0 -

Again, see my last post. I'm not talking about fine changes, and I'm talking about things which should have been in there from v1.
I wonder how people would have responded to an iPhone v1 withno touchscreen and no light .... Then for a version with a touchscreen a few months later and then one with light a few months after that....
My point is that in thisday and age , I'm pretty sure the greats brains of cutting edge technology can incorporate a touchscreen and a light from the first version...."To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant." Amos Bronson Alcott0
