im 19, just got a car for xmas and paid £1500 for insurance with hastings direct with 2 years no claims with the NFU which i got from driving a van

3 weeks after paying i got a letter from hastings saying i needed to py £902 plus £35 fee within 7 days because my no claims are from a commercial vehicle and therefore arent counted.

am i forced to pay the £900 or should i cancell it?
also if i carry on will i only get 1 years no claims or will i have 3?

im seriously annoyed because i told them when i got my quote that the no claims was through the NFU and i gave them the registration number of the van, then they wait till after the two week free, refundable cancellation period to tell me its invalid and i have to pay £900

i used the van as a car, not or work.

thanks

nope they are right van ones dont count, you have 0 no claims on car
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Although most won't, you will find someone who will take it (eg chaucer direct), so find out how much the premium will be with your NCD and then find out from Hastings the cost for cancelling and do the sums before cancelling and starting again.

An advantage to cancelling and starting again will be that (assuming you have a claim free year) you will have 3 years car NCD to use this time next year and will have the whole market to choose from!

    ...

But did you tell them from the outset that the NCB was earned on a commercial vehicle, because as you have found, such NCB is not usually transferable to a passenger car.

This may not be what you want to hear, but I would rather tell you like it is, rather than mislead you by posting what you may prefer to hear.

    From Hastings FAQs

Can I use the no claims discount I have earnt on a motorbike / commercial vehicle?

No, we can only accept no claims discount that have been earnt on a private car policy, in the UK.

Was the van on a trade policy or a private one?

If if was a trade one then you probably wont find anyone. So you will lose those 2 years no claims and start again.

Nobody in the same situation has come back and said they have found anyone that will accept it yet.
