  • How's your aubergine going MBE?

Not very well. I should have repotted it about 5 months ago. :o
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • I'm wondering whether there'll be a MrBE thread next year, what with his absences & having a life & all that!

Yes MrBE, a much better year than last year!
I have pickled 2 large jars of beetroot.

I made a lasagne with home grown onions. Jeepers the potency! Still have a number of onions left - never really had any success with onions before, so really pleasing to see 8-9 decent samples.

Cucumbers have been the best I've ever acheived. I put this down to planting them out earlier & the sunshine. I have 3-4 more to harvest this weekend.

I still have carrots in the ground. Making soup with them tonight or this weekend.

My forst tom that turned red got nibbled! Not by me alas. However the 2nd has been harvested & will be sampled soon. A few others are starting to turn in colour.

Pretty pleasing overall, though I wish I coiuld be eating the toms, as I know they'll be awesome!

The chillis have flowers. To be honest I've stopped monitoring them closely, as it has been very busy at work.

Lettuce is still growing, however growth has slowed. Bit like the economy! ;)
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Read Annie and my posts above regarding Toms and pick them as soon as they turn a bit pink or even yellowish and put them on the window sill. They'll soon ripen. Then when it starts to get too cold, pick what's left and I always put them in a cardboard box under the stairs, but don't forget them. Even the greenest will ripen.

I'm wondering that too - there nearly wasn't one this year. I don't have the time I used to (and the gardening has definitely suffered as a result!) :o

In the meantime, I've picked that squash. I've no idea what it'll be like but it'll get eaten in the next week or so.

And surprisingly, I'm away this weekend. Again.

I've been doing this with the big ones as this year mine have been munched more than usual. It seems to be working well thus far. :)

  • Gardening catalogues have started to arrive for 2014.
Is it my imagination or are they coming earlier each year?

Got 2 gallons of blackcurrent wine bubbling away nicely from this years crop and plenty more in the freezer. Can't decide whether to make more wine or jam.
Started to collect the rosa rugosa rosehips, makes a very good marmalade with oranges.

Today I picked 4 cucumbers, and a few tomatoes that are slowly changing colour.
I also noticed I have one chilli! (not much from 13 plants, but there you go...)

Had a couple of night temperatures of 8C.
Picked the last cucumber today, as plants are now looking past it.
Beginning to get signs of botrytis on tomato plants, so I'll be taking off the remaining leaves during the week.
Gathered the last of the runner beans.
Caterpillars have rampaged through pak choi, rhubarb and goji berry.
Grapevine almost made the other end of greenhouse, but leaves are changing colour now due to colder nights.
Might move the chilli plants indoors soon, as I left them in greenhouse too late last year and lost the lot.
On a brighter note, alpine strawberries still flowering and fruiting well and we've also had a couple of bucketfuls of apples with more to come.

I just picked my last Q too and a couple of the tom plants are looking very sad indeed, so I'll strip leaves but I'll leave 'till the last poss moment before picking the green ones. I'm down to picking half of what I was a few weeks ago each week now, for which I'm grateful

My alpines have flowered at all this year, spread like mad mind, but not a single flower yet :(

Hope my parsnips look as good below ground as above :D
Earthed up leeks and mowed the lawn today but still cant think where to put the garlic this year as the squashes are in the big tub I want to use. Might start them in modules instead.

Going to dry/freeze the basil today
Could I just ask if anyone has frozen rosemary? I have frozen chives, basil and parsley but never rosemary. I am presuming it will die off in the winter is that right?
