If you have a smartphone and your a BT Customer you can
access your BT calling plan from your smartphone and use your inclusive or cheaper 01/02/03/ 0800/0845/0870 minutes .

You can use the BT SmartTalk app when you're at home, connected to your wireless BT Home Hub.

Out and about? Connect via wi-fi including 7.5m BT Wi-fi hotspots worldwide.

No wi-fi? The BT SmartTalk app will also work over your mobile 3G connection in the UK.

App works both on Payg and Contract Mobiles.

Thanks for this. It looks interesting.

I haven't a BT Home Hub so thought it wasn't for me. Then I looked at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bt.voiceapps.homeaway which makes no mention of using BT Home Hub.

We have a BT landline and use plus.net for broadband. My smartphone uses Orange 3G. I'm wondering if I'll be able to use this app.

I'm away today but will download later and see what happens.

It's a bit smoke and mirrors. Firstly it is a VOIP app (Voice Over Internet Protocol) so a wifi connection (your own?) means you could use your landline anyway. As for your mobile - this needs your plan to include data. No data = no access. When there is access, you will be paying for the connection in Mb, whilst the call will still be billed to your BT A/c.

If you can access Skype, the call is even cheaper as there will not be any charge on your BT bill (as Skype to Skype calls are free - although thae data overhead still applies).

As with everything VOIP, if the bandwidth isn't there - the call quality will be dreadful!

The clue is its a mobile app so yes you would probaly be using your BT Landline from home but if suited you could use your mobile. Also up to 5 family or friends can access it so if one of the family wanted to use their smartfone mobile to access the inclusive minutes from home they could.

You dont need a data plan on your mobile to access the 7.5m BT Wi-fi hotspots worldwide.

If you were using a data connection this would be offset by the fact that you would primarily be using it to make inclusive calls so you wouldnt be billed twice.

If you use Skype other then to make free Skype Calls you would be charged .Using your inclusive minutes using this service no charge.

If you have inclusive minutes at the appropriate time good way to avoid mobile networks expensive charges for 0845/0870 and another way to call 0800/0808 freephone without incurring charges.

Great for the payg mobile user avoids expensive rates for 01/02/03 0845/0870 0800/0808 calls.
  • Hello, query principally at John from January 2013.

Recently installed Smart Talk app on my mobile and am testing it using my home WiFi connection.

Tried calling 18185 and the number is not recognised (at the front end of the normal number).

Tried calling the 0808 number given by 18185 as their freephone access number and I got through to 18185 but a recorded message tells me I am not registered with the service so cannot proceed. My home phone and the mobile on which I have the smart talk app are both registered - but the 'incoming call' side of 18185 doesn't 'see' either of these (or that is what it looks like). When the call arrives at 18185 from the BT Smart Talk app, it looks like it is from a number NOT related to my account - perhaps logically!!

If John (or anyone) has succeeded in using BT Smart Talk with 18185 the please can they post an explanation of how to do it?

    Thanks, Frank
  • If it dont present your landline or mobile number to 18185 it will not work.

What sort of calls are you trying to make via 18185 from your mobile.
  • Hello again, I want to use the 18185 service for calls to UK landlines during the day when out and about with my PAYG mobile.

The BT rate for daytime use (I am on free evening and weekend calls) is 9p per minute and with 18185 it is a 5p set up fee then nothing else.

If I can get through to 18185 via Smart Talk I would HOPE to place a call from anywhere with a WiFi connection to a UK number for 5p with no more costs.

I have tried calling landline numbers just using the Smart Talk app and the mobile number shows up as the caller id / incoming call number. On their website 18185 shows 2 numbers (one free 0808 1 703703 and one paid 0208 8180 2828) for use with providers other than BT or for a mobile access. I tried using the 0808 and was told I wasn't registered.

I will try both numbers and give some feedback.
  • Frank, can you make 18185 calls from your mobile not using the smart talk app.
Have you registered your mobile number on 18185 ?

18185 is a indirect access number for a fixed landline only that still allows access ,you cant use the smartphone app to call indirectly .

If you could call their 0208 number their is no point in you doing so because you don't have inclusive peak minutes so your pay the BT full rate to ring it plus your pay 5p connection and 1p a minute to 18185.

Your only hope is to get the Freephone to work, and pay 5p connection and 1p a minute for 01/02/03 calls.

If you get a www.giffgaff.com payg sim (just put it on basic tariff) you can use it in conjunction with 18185 as they don't charge for Freephone 0500/ 0800/0808 calls.
