if she only wants to read books an e-reader is the best option, if she is a bit more adventurous I'd go for a tablet (maybe as well as a reader if she can afford it, as they are different devices).
I used to work with older people (maybe it doesn't apply to her, you don't say her age), and many loved computers, and using the internet to communicate with their relatives - silversurfers!
She'd probably someone IT savvy to give her a hand when she gets stuck, but it's just a matter of confidence
