Kindle advice

Options
My mother in law has just decided that she wants a Kindle as she loves reading and thinks she would find life easier with one.
Especially in bed when books are cumbersome and awkward for her to hold for any length of time..
Please can anyone tell me which would be best for her and as price isn't really an issue would she be better with a Kindle or a tablet or a notebook as don't have much idea on any of them?
Thanks in advance.. anything to keep her quiet!

Has MIL got a broadband connection? She will also need and Amazon account.
Having said that the simplest solution would be the kindle paperwhite which has a backlight.
If she doesn't have broadband then the 3G version would be the one to go for.
Tablets are useless for outside reading, E=Ink displays work better in the sunshine.

  • Hi, yes she does have broadband and I have an Amazon account so we have both of those things covered.
When you say backlight, does that mean she could read in the dark without disturbing the father in law?
Would the kindle be better than any of the other devices then?
Thanks again, will look at best for the paper white in the meantime.

Yup thats the idea of the Paperwhite. So you could go for the wifi only version.

If she wants to surf the net, or catch up on emails etc a tablet may be a better choice.
Tesco stock 'em have a play.

I would opt for the Kindle , its a lot easier and user friendly than a tablet ..

plus it needs recharging far less frequently (mine goes weeks without a recharge, although it's not got a backlight).

If all she's interested in it for is reading books then I'd say that a dedicated e-reader (kindle, kobo etc) is the way to go rather than a tablet or notebook. And for reading in bed, you can now get ones with built in backlight such as the kindle paperwhite that penryn suggests.

Your MIL will need to register the Kindle to her own Amazon account unless you are gonna pay for all of her downloads! ;) You can buy the Kindle on your account and then re-register it to a different account.

If she wants to borrow e-books from the library she's be better off with an e-reader other than a Kindle such as a Kobo. Libraries aren't able to lend out Kindle books.

Not necessarily - my Dad has a Kindle 3G and we have a joint Amazon account, he only uses gift vouchers on it. It was my account only but then something went wrong and I wasnt there so the nice techie person suggested we register it in joint names so Dad can sort it if something goes wrong.

TBH that's exactly how me, gf, mum and gf's sis operate an account - joint account with only vouchers as funding... when it gets low someone tops it up. It just seemed that from the wording the OP didn't appreciate that the Amazon account that the other poster referred to was for account operation purposes rather than just for purchasing the Kindle to start with.

    ...which has a backlight.
Note: it uses a light guide fitted in front of the display.
