  • to clarify, is someone trying to "hack" my IP address?

    nope. not likely at least.
are you using Mac? it's most likely an internal conflict, try restarting everything (computer, router, modem) and anything else that feeds off your wireless network (phones, consoles, other computers), then see if problem resurfaces again

Assuming you have a router then no, this is the internal addressing scheme on your home network. It means your router has handed out the same IP address to two of your devices.

Reboot your router, followed by all your computers. This should sort it.

I generally receive that message when using FB from another location, then when I use my own computer, I get that message.

The usual IP of a computer is generally started 192.172.x.x, but on a router starts 80.x.x.x.

Although, as you use a laptop, check your Wifi settings to be sure it's secure. Check the logs to see the logins.
  • Did this pop up while you were browsing a website or did it appear near where your system clock is (bottom right)?

I'm assuming that if it was near the system clock it talked about an IP conflict. If this is the case it is likely to be one of two things:

    1) Your home router is giving out IP addresses that it has already allocated (this can normally be solved by a reboot)

    2) Your home router has run out of addresses to give (unlikely but it depends how your router has been setup).

Restart all your equipment and see what happens.

    3) One (or more) of your devices has a static IP address in the same range of IP addresses allocated by DHCP
How do I add a signature?

and, in Windows, if you run the Network Diagnostic on the pc with the conflict it should resolve the problem by changing the adaptor setting from manual to DHCP allocated.

which is OK unless you need to have a static IP address for a specific device/reason. If this is the case then change the static IP address to one that is outside the DHCP pool (this may require a change to the size of the DHCP pool in the router admin pages)

  • or bind the MAC to the IP :p

The OP doesn't sound techie enough to me to have been using fixed IP addresses.

Is there any wifi extender in use? Maybe there are two DHCP servers active if it wasn't set up correctly.
