A quick fire way to :
Getting stopped by a ANPR police car.
Getting the car towed away to the pound
    Your own insurance cancelled
the car stuck at the pound
And , a trip to court for no insurance, which is what happens when you argue the toss.

Why would the existing Insurers cancel the policy?

    Hi All, quick question.

I have a car which is insured fully comprehensive. If I buy a used car, can I go and pick it up from the seller and drive it home under my own uinsurance policy which also covers me to drive any car but only covers me for third party, fire and theft, just until I get it home and insure it properly??

    Thanks :)

I'd be amazed if it included fire or theft.

You can't (without trade insurance) drive another car that is not insured by someone else on your fully comp.

I'm sorry but this is not necessarily true. It depends on the insurance policy. Mine allows it.

Same here, I can drive any other car, other than my own insured one provided:
    I don't own it
    I have the owners consent

Nowhere on my certificate or in the policy does it state that the other car has to have insurance (and no policy I've ever had has said that either)

I'd say the not owned by the OP was the important part as I've never had a policy that requires the car to have its own insurance for doc.

Whereas every policy I've had in the last half decade has.

None of mine have since I started driving.

My first ever policy when I was a teenager covered me to drive "Any car owned or driven by the policyholder." Times change.

Just ask the seller to drive it back for you and then you can take him/her back home in your existing car. Simple.

Forget all the other speculation and 'debate' on this thread, the only people you should take notice of are your insurance company. Phone them up and ask the question.

When I changed my car recently, I was able to change the car details on line (I'm with Axa) with the date of collecting the new car. It stated that "on collection date only, your current vehicle will be covered until you get your new one."

yep, I remember those too, and DOC cover was any vehicle in those days so a car policy also covered vans & bikes
