Hi All, quick question.

I have a car which is insured fully comprehensive. If I buy a used car, can I go and pick it up from the seller and drive it home under my own uinsurance policy which also covers me to drive any car but only covers me for third party, fire and theft, just until I get it home and insure it properly??

Thanks :)

Almost certainly NO, DOC cover invariable only covers cars not owned by you and increasingly excludes cars owned by spouse & cars that aren't insured in their own right

    Bolded the IMPORTANT bit......

But nothing to stop you insuring it AT the place by phone.....

DO GET A POLICY NUMBER.... you don't want stopping on the way home and the car impounding! If possible get an email cover note....

Last time I did this midweek my brokers did it all for me..... time before it was a weekend and they (mine) don't work weekends!!!

I'd say the not owned by the OP was the important part as I've never had a policy that requires the car to have its own insurance for doc.

    That's what he means.....
If someone else is insuring the car and your fully comp lets you drive another car that's OK so long as the other car is insured .....

You can't (without trade insurance) drive another car that is not insured by someone else on your fully comp.

Speak to your insurance company, sometimes they will let you drive both for up to 7 days.

    Horses mouth so to speak.

Keep a record of time and date of phne call and the name of the person you spoke to.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Driving Other Cars, invariably is third party only and on cars you don't own.

Increasing it also doesn't cover cars owned by your spouse and cars that don't have their own policy on them.

Your own policy will tell you exact what applies in your case

Driving Other Cars - the bit of your insurance which (sometimes) allows you to drive vehicles other than the one the policy is for. As noted, it's unlikely to apply in your situation.

Speak to your insurer - the better ones will give you a week or so's grace period where you can drive both cars for free or at nominal cost, but you'll have to arrange it in advance. Failing that, arrange insurance for the new car before you drive it home. You can get a short term policy (Google "day insurance") if you need to cover both for a couple of weeks, then transfer your no claims over to the new car.

A quick fire way to :
Getting stopped by a ANPR police car.
Getting the car towed away to the pound
    Your own insurance cancelled
the car stuck at the pound
And , a trip to court for no insurance, which is what happens when you argue the toss.
    Be happy...;)
