PAC Codes and cancellation procedure

I'm just about to send in my letter of cancellation to Vodafone and request my PAC Code (so I can keep my mobile number when I transfer to a new network) but want to know how long it takes Vodafone to actually cancel the contract? Do they send you a letter to confirm once it has been cancelled?
And when should I apply for a new tariff with another network?
Is there a way to have a seamless transistion whereby you experience no down time?

If you are cancelling a contract then you have to give 30 days notice, in that time they should provide you with the PAC Code, when you recieve the code then you give that to the network you are signing up to and they will transfer the number over. If you get it before the 30 days notice has expired then the new network will sort out the change over of number and you wont have any downtime.0
