CHAPS payment refusal

Options
Can someone tell me what happens if your bank refuses a CHAPS payment because they dont accept them or telegraphic transfers? Does it go through as a normal bank payment similar to BACS the same way a FS would?

I'd expect it to go back to sender.

Which bank? What type of account?

I think the payment will fail when the agency's bank try to send it so it'll never leave their account. How much is it for, can it not be sent through Faster Payments? If not then it'll probably have to be a cheque.

Unfortunately they "dont do" FP but you can have a CHAPS for £25:mad:

Thing is she has just gone from weekly pay with one agency to monthly so with xmas in hand has had to wait like an eternity with what she has paid out and waiting for this monthly payment. She wouldn't normally pay a premium for it to clear and manages money really well so just needed this payment through.

I transferred £1000 over to her by FP and low and behold the CHAPS payment cleared at 17:15.:undecided Me somehow thinks the Agency has charged for a CHAPS and I think sneakily FP it over, otherwise why have no inbound CHAPS on their T&C's?

If your sisters card one online statement shows it as an incoming CHAPS payment then that is what it is.
If it shows it as a faster payment then it is a faster payment.

The incoming payment probably shows the "Reference" specified.

If I send a Faster Payment to (another current account of) myself saying "CHAPS TO ME" in the reference, it will show up with exactly those 3 words in my statement. I never made any CHAPS payment though. As a customer, you cannot normally tell how the money was sent to you.

keyser666, glad to hear your sister got her money from the agency, even if there was a bit of panic involved and you are now left with sorting out your emergency payment. Is it possible that there was a misunderstanding between your sister and her agency? Quite unusual for anyone to pay a salary/wages by CHAPS.

Bottom line: it's either the agency who said they'd send the payment by CHAPS and then they didn't, or your sister misunderstanding what the agency said, or the agency saying one thing and then doing another, or CardOne saying they don't accept CHAPS in their T&Cs and then accepting a CHAPS. You'll probably never find out....may be CardOne can tell your sister how the money was sent but not sure it's worth pursuing.

    .

It depends on which bank you are a customer of.

I just checked some of my online statements. Of those I have looked at Lloyds, Halifax and Nat West tell you and in addition give the incoming FP reference number.
N+P give the type of credit ie FP but no reference number.
FD, Nationwide and CoOp just say credit.

Yeah, you are right, it's different from bank to bank what they show you.

I have current accounts with just about any UK bank, and I regularly transfer money between my accounts. I don' think I have regularly seen anything that allows me to identify how my transfers have been sent - - - or how any deposits from 3rd parties have been made.

May be some banks do show FP, CHAPS, Cheque, cash etc, but I don't thing they all do. And they certainly don't do everything they do consistently.....

I'd never heard of CardOne, but I've now had a brief look at their website and I can see they are not a bank, so they certainly won't be able to receive CHAPS payments directly. However, they also state that customers money is held in a NatWest client account, and NatWest certainly can receive CHAPS, so it may be that the money could have got there that way.

I hope your sister is managing her money well in order to inprove her credit record, as it makes no sense to have an account of this type if you have any chance of getting even a basic account with a real bank.
