How to tether tablet to phone

I am aware of tethering possibilities, but never actually done tethering cos I didn't have a need.

However I've recently acquired a Samsung Tab 2 tablet which I am trying to tether to my phone (as the tab only does WiFi).

I've installed a tethering app on my phone (WiFi Tether (for rooted phones)) and had assumed that when switched on, it would be detected as a WiFi hotspot by my tab. However it is not showing up on the list of WiFis on my tab.

What am I a doing wrong?

Also, should the WiFi hotspot have a password or can anyone within range use my phone data?

If you are using OVIVO for it does this apply to you ???
    Yes Ovivo Mobile supports Tethering.
However, customers who use devices that were purchased from other networks, may find that tethering restrictions may still be enforced on that handset even though it is unlocked.

You should not normally need a seperate app to do wifi tethering. What phone are you trying to tether it with?

    You don't need an app.

Go to settings, wireless and networks, then wifi hotspot.

    Thanks for everyone's input

Have now managed to tether using Rusty's suggestion on one of my phones.

Just set up my phone as a WiFi hotspot for a tablet. A password needed to be entered as part of the set up, and had to be entered on the tablet, as for any secured network connection.
