I'd get a new keyboard and mouse, and use the existing monitor.

The amount of grime, crumbs and germs on a 6 year old keyboard vs £20 ??

I'm still using the "Windows 95" keyboard that came with my first PC back in the 1990's. It needs an adapter to convert the old AT-style plug to PS/2, but it works fine. I prefer it to the squidgy short-stroke one that came with the latest PC.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Keyboards haven't really changed much since then, except occasionally someone comes up with a stupid design with random keys in the wrong place and/or with blue LEDs all over it. You'll be pleased to know that you can plug that AT->PS2 adaptor into a PS2->USB adaptor if your next PC doesn't have a PS2 port. Worst I've seen is a dumb terminal version of an IBM model M keyboard, plugged into an adaptor stack to turn it into AT, then PS2 and then USB... worked fine though!

I have long been somewhat baffled why so many people buy laptops for general use in the house

For me it means I don't have to find space for a computer table, plus I can sit in a comfy chair rather than an 'office chair'

I'm sure many also like to be in the same room as the rest of the family instead of a spare room somewhere. Although in some cases I'm not sure why as I've read about families conversing via Facebook rather than talking to each other when they're sat on the same settee!

    Mystery solved :D

    P.S.

Liking the mouse. Is it suitable for laptops?

    Space & portability.
