The green slip is valid for 90 days from issue, so keep it... Ours wasn't removed coming back from a seatle day trip back into canada and not on the flight home; this was Feb 2006; upon flying into toronto last week the canadian immigration official just removed it as it had expired..
I now have one in there again after the niagara day trip; and immigration didn't remove it again.
In conclusion I just leave it in there and don't worry about it; remove it after it's expired if you wish, but if not someone will do it at some point
You were lucky. If the system had worked properly you would have been flagged as an overstayer in the US 90 days after your original trip and denied admission at Niagara. Don't count on it happening again.
Immigration don't remove them - airline staff (or Canadian immigration officials) do so.
