what exactly does refused car insurance refer to?

I received a letter prior to renewing my insurance with a company 2 years ago, saying they would be unable to offer me insurance agan. I had not asked them, and only recently I began to worry that in fact that amounted to refusing car insurance. I had not thought of it like that before. I am worried now that I did not declare it f counts as refused insurance . IFor the last couple of years I have used a couple of comparison charts. This time i looked at Aviva and got a good quote. But right at the end it asks you to check some assumptions. One of which is that you have never been refused car insurance. Does this not mean refused payout on a claim? Or can it mean being what has happened with me? Does anyone know for sure. My family say don't worry, but they are not experts, and it is worrying me a great deal. How would it affect me now 2 years on?

  • Can you offer any further information to why they wouldn't offer you insurance?

Normally insurance companies will only ever put you in that position is if you have been fraudulent or have possibly been so deceitful that they felt that you had become an uninsurable risk. There are probably other reasons too but its not a decision taken lightly.

If it was a case that they no longer offered insurance or something more to do with them rather than you, you should be OK.
  • There are all sorts of reasons that an insurer will decide not to offer renewal. I really struggle to understand why this question is still asked to personal lines customers as I've never known of a practical example of it causing an issue down the line.

It may be indicative of some more serious adverse history, but that should be caught elsewhere.

In this particular case, choose no.

    Was the Insurer NIG ?
  • claret_mike. I had 3 accidents in a 2 years (after never having any in 20 years)!. But that was covered by them. Regarding the question of anything fraudulent, I suspected that the third party was making a fraudulent claim. But that was them, not me. It went to litigation and took quite a while to resolve. (In fact there was no clear resolution, but they gave up at some point, ) It seems most of the money went on litigation. Dacouch- The insurer was not NIG

That just sounds like they decided not to offer you a renewal. I would say that's different to refusing you insurance, but then again I'm not sure exactly why they ask you that anyway.

I was in a position a few years back where I moved house and the existing provider couldn't cover me at my new address (too risky) and my broker at the time had to end the policy a month early and start me on a new policy with someone else. They said this didn't count as having a policy cancelled either!
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
