Can't comment from experience on alternatives to the speedlight.
I've got the Canon Speedlight 420EX which I bought quite a few years ago on Amazon for about £100 ish(£200 ish now?). It's been a great gun as the head can be manipulated into just about any position. Good for direct flash when there's a lot to light but subtle enough for close work when positioned for bounce/reflected flash. Recharges very quickly so good for rapid fire. As with all separate guns there is no red eye problem.
I've always used it in fully automatic mode but never tried (understood:o) how to use any other mode. Got a mate who lives out your way that used to be the chief photographer on the Echo so I asked him about other modes but he said that on his gun(500 series) he never really found a need to use them.
One thing you an be sure of is that a speedlight will be fully compatible with your Canon DSLR. HTH:)
Cheers artha
Its a 430exII that was/is £200ish

Evening everyone,
earlier on this week I posted that I'd done a T's on-line order and had been overcharged for 1.5LT bottles of Vimto (£2.65 instead of the online price of £1.53). Your collective advice (thank you all) was to email T’s and complain that this was out of order. I did do this and T’s replied by saying “online prices are just a guide and subject to change anyway “ so stood by their price change.
So, on all your advices again I emailed T’s to tell them how unreasonable I though their decision was and now T’s reply is .......
I’m very sorry to learn you have been charged more than you were expecting for the bottles of Vimto you received in your recent grocery order. my colleague was correct in advising that price shown online are a guide price only.
However, there was sadly a technical error with this item and the incorrect price was shown online. Rest assured this issue has been escalated and I can now inform you that the correct price is shown online.
In the meantime, however, I honour the price of £1.53 per bottle and have refunded the difference back to your payment card

Thank you to all you lovely people for your help. It wasn’t just the money that was involved it was the principle too.0 -

Anyone had any experience of being a Deal or New Deal contestant? Hubby just had a call to say they are considering him and he'll know within 2 weeks! Only problem is he has just started a new job, how long do they stay on the show for?
Think i read somewhere that contestants go to Bristol for two weeks and they film a lot of shows over that period.
If he gets chosen he will have to ask.
Hope he gets chosen :T0 -

No wombles for me, this year, not that I usually see many anyway. Picked up the M & S socks and they are very toasty on the feet.
Have not kept up with my New Year spreadsheetand only half way through Jan .
Hope others are not a New Year Res failure, like me - oh well always next year. Doing well on my other resolution0 -
Good evening lovely people:A
Hope everyone is ok and in good mood.
I'm working on my business startup, so not much time to catch up properly, but here is a nice chance to read the last few pages ( at least:o), while sipping red wine and watching oh to do the dishes:DFrench_Knickers wrote: »ok then you twisted my arm! Thanks lawrie, keep the criticism coming, I like it when people offer opinion.
Brilliant pictures as ever:T Probably:o you might try to keep your horizon line in the first upper third - it will give more detail to the front:D or on the second - it will bring more air and sense of "infinity". Enough said, will get my coat:D and off to the photo forum:rotfl:

Some of them seem to be on it for weeks, some just disappear ( have Togo back to work).
I like the sound of being put up ina hotel for weeks and someone else paying the bill, just a shame it's Bristol, London or the seaside would be much better for me.0
