PaymENT HAVE BEEN STOPPED FOR MY SON BY TAX CREDITS

Rung tax creidts this morning to find out why my payments have been reduced, the operator informed me this is because my son is no longer in education but the strange thing is he is. she said there is nothing she can do i have to wait for the letter from them, Anybody else experienced this problem and is it easily rectified?

A lot of people have been getting letters asking for proof there children are still in further education, tax credits are having a big compliance check on students over 16.
Do you still recieve child benifit for your son and is it possible you could have missed a letter from tax credits asking for more info, either that or there letter got lost in the post.

    Hi crobo

You can also give the tax credits another ring to ask if they can extend the deadline date for which they are asking for that extra info with regards to your son remaining in education.

As when you receive your letter it will be asking you to provide proof from the school or college your son is attending. The letter will also have a deadline date to send your info in by. You can get a confirmation letter from either the head of school or college to confirm his attendance.

This will obviously take a bit of time to receive that letter, hence asking them to extend the deadline.

I know this because I have had to do this myself for my daughter this week!
  • Yes i do still recieve cb , they said the letter was sent on the 7.1.13 and could take up to 2 weeks but they have the name of the college so they could contact the college directly. Do you think i should ring child benefit then ?

Yes ring the child benefit centre too and just follow the same steps I have explained in my above post...

Its really nothing for you to worry about!

They just want that confirmation because they need to know that they are paying you the correct payments.

When you speak to the head of college ask him/her to also confirm the courses your son is doing and the date for when he will be leaving college.

I would think what had happened here is you did not recieve the letter from them asking for more info about your sons education.
I would try tax credits agian and ask if you have missed the deadline for a compliance letter.
Child benifit wont be able to help.

It could be that these compliance letters are coming through at a snails pace given the good ole Royal Mail have been inundated with having to deal with all the back log of all the Xmas mail!

However,if tax credits sent out your letter on the 7th it could still very well be amongst all that back log! Plus I think they send letters by second class post too!

But Frester made a good point as you could very well receive that letter after the deadline so ring them again just to confirm this.
  • When i rung the main number this morning she said she couldnt help me and i had to just wait for the letter, Which makes me thin k i have missed a letter why else would they stop my payments for him.

Hi crobo, just to confirm the above. Have they reduced or actually stopped all the payments? This makes a slight difference.

If they have stopped payments then I think tax credits have been rather naughty by doing that given you haven't received that compliance letter yet?

I would still give them another ring and tell them what I have told you. They cannot leave you without any money to live on.

Can I ask when was the first time you notified tax credits that your son was starting college? and did you have to fill in some kind of form to confirm this?
