Not sure if this question is in the right place, but here goes! OH wants a new LCD or LED TV. He wants a 40", but I think it will be overpowering - the living room is 12' x 11' and our current (just about alive) CRT TV is 27". I think a 32" will be enough (and cheaper :D). Any opinions?

This says you should be sitting between 5 and 8 and a half feet away from a 40 inch screen

In my experience when you first get a big screen TV it seems huge.

A month later you wish you'd got the next size up.

I think it depends on what you like. Personally I don't get the whole big tv thing as I don't want it to dominate the room. I have a 32 inch tv and am happy with that, anything bigger would look silly in our lounge, the room is about 14' x 10'.

It's worth noting though that some of the more expensive LCD's have a smaller edging around the screen, so it's possible to get a larger screen but the tv itself can be physically the same size or slightly smaller if that makes sense?

Also I found it's pointless looking at tv's in big stores as they have loads of space around them, so even the bigger tv's look 'normal', but might be too large at home. Good luck.

    My thoughts exactly
Overly big TVs just seem really chavvy, or maybe its a compensatory thing......... like small men who have to drive huge cars :D

I guess it depends what you're gonna watch on it too? My parents have a large living room and have a 32" tv, they normally only watch standard programmes, occasional football match.

I have a smaller living room, but watch a lot of films and sports, I have a 40" TV, which is great, not too big or too small.

I have sometimes thought 'I wish I'd bought bigger...' but the reality is I dont need any bigger, and I used to have a 32" TV in the same room which was fine...

My Tv here in the lounge is 26" and the one in the back kitchen 16"' they're Ok but i'll probably switch to something bigger, but not massive. But not until they die which hopefully will be some years yet.

  • Remember your new LCD/LED will probably be pushed slightly further back as it won't have the bulk of the CRT. We have a 42 inch plasma that looked huge at first but is just right to be honest. Our main sofo is about 8/9 ft from it.
  • Nothing to see here, move along.

.....and with a power consumption of 3.5 Kw it would keep you toasty warm on those cold winter nights.

A TV CANNOT be too large for a room.

Move the ornaments, flower vases and silly family photo's to the cupboard under the stairs. Fill the room with Full HD visual goodness.
