Apple TV box or HDMI for iPad ?

Just bought an Apple iPad with wifi which is really good.

I have loaded the app. For Sky on the Go, and receive Sports etc in a
Non buffering stream.

I believe that Apple sell two products, as add ons, one of which, I need a recommendation for.

What I want to achieve, is to transfer the incoming pictures of the
Sky sports, from the tablet, to my large screen tv.

Considering that the iPad does not have an HDMI socket as standard,
They sell a plug in one at £35, or there is an Apple TV box, which is connected to the tv, for £99.

Considering that is the only application that I intend to use it for, will the cheaper HDMI addition, do the job equally well?

Thanks in anticipation.

I'm pretty sure that you're not allowed to send Sky Go stuff off the iPad like that. I've seen it happen through AppleTV at least, not sure about your other options for getting video out of it, but don't be surprised if it's blocked.

as almillar says sky dont allow you to send the video via airplay to an apple tv or via hdmi out, there is no workaround for this until sky disable this draconian policy.

if you can return the ipad, and the sky sports streaming is your only requirement, you could get a cheap laptop with hdmi out, just make sure if can play sky go without any buffering.

there is no way for sky to block hdmi out on a pc as far as i know

You once could jailbreak your iPad and then use a hdmi lead or apple tv to mirror your ipad with no restrictions what-so-ever.
I think sky have now found a way to stop their app working on jailbroken ipads.
Has your tv got a monitor input? You could get a cheap pc for £40/£50, connect it to your tv and then use an app called 'remote mouse' to control the mouse and keyboard.
  • Many thanks almillar, blueghost and Joe2407 for your replies.

Looks like Sky are successfully protecting their market !

So if you want 'on demand' stuff, on your TV, instead of an iPad, you should be using your Sky box, an XBox 360, a Mac or PC...
