Ever worth getting a new car?

  • One of mine as bought at 3 years old and will be 6 in the summer. Only 28k miles, my putting on 4k or 5k a year. this MOT it had an advisory on very minor corrosion to a brake pipe.

I paid around £5.5k for it, a Vauxhall Astra Auto. It is worth perhaps £3.5k today to shift it or £4k private sale.

So I'll have lost around £2k for 3 years worth of motoring on this car. That is hard to beat, anywhere and after a few months, a new car is just like a 2 or 3 year old one.

Were I spending lots of time in the car, I'd have bought a newer more luxurious motor.

My brother-in-law works for Vauxhall and changes his car every 6mths for a brand new on lease, the 'old' cars are sold on to the public well below the cost of a new one but are perfect condition. No doubt Fords do the same.

ford do - my mate got a motor like this

Been looking at Fiestas, couple of years old, no more than 30k on the clock and am looking to pay £8k upwards.

Just been on Ford website, appears I can get a brand new one for just over £10k.

Is it ever worth the forecourt loss?

Look at somewhere like brokers for cars, my last car I purchased brand new and the next one I will too, whether new or previously owned they lose money, but hey, you cannot take money with you when you pass.
  • As the only reason I am considering a new car is so that I can then keep it for life - I've decided to try and haggle Ford down by the £700 finance charge included in their overall Options Scheme.

This scheme seems different to their usual "contract" scheme in that they literally hand over to the customer roughly the VAT on the car. If thisn't spent elsewhere it means that this is used to pay off the very small 24monthly repayments until the 2yrs is up and then the customer can choose what to do. Meaning - No purchase cost at all for first 2 years.

In my position this means I could have a good car - needing little or no outlay for 2 years and by then I will have received a sufficient lump sum from my small civil service pension to buy it outright with no further need of finance.

If I can beat them down further - maybe in March when the new Reg comes in and tthere may be more pressure to sell new cars - it will serve my purposes and I'll have a 2yr old Fiesta still costing less than if I bought it 2nd hand in 2 years time.

    What do you think?

ive order a brandew new VW polo with added mulitfunction steering wheel and satnav/radio system.

its costing me £14k on a plan where i pay monthly for 3 yrs then can upgrade for a new one so i never have to pay for MOT :)

Or i can decide to carry on paying and keep the car or even hand the car back and i owe nothing.

Its up to you really...but if your looking at new cars make sure you look around.

I got a deal where i dont pay tax or insurance for a yr (get it for free from vw) and then they paid £1k towards my deposit.

ive always had old cars and theyve always had issures that i just cant keep fixing.. this will be my first new car so im looking forward to the new warranty and no MOT bills :D

    xx

Being as kind as opossible to a "Newbie", this is a MONEY SAVING FORUM.

I assume that you are paying around £500 per month just in finance, before you actually put fuel in the vehicle.
If you follow this scheme, then you will be paying this for as long as you drive a car:(

A better idea, would be to buy a car for about £5K and put the rest of the money towards a house;)

Is this a realistic aim - to keep a car for life?
How long is "life" going to be, given that Vauxhall seem to think that it is 100K miles/10 years?
Other manufacturers may differ in their estimations.
  • We had a brand new car once, 0% finance made it cheaper than getting a loan on a used one. See what deals are available.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Actually - there was another thread of a Merc vs Gold TDI...

Your question is 'is it worth it' but there are 2 questions....
    1) What will it cost
    2) Is that worth it for you

If you're referring to my thread, we worked out that in this case, a 3.5 petrol Merc Cabrio was cheaper and just as practical over 5 years than a Passat 1.6 TDi estate in the circumstances that the owner drives.

If she was doing more miles than she is, it would be the other way around, so this needs to play into consideration here, too.
Only you can really say if brand new or even 1-2 yrs old is 'worth it' to you.

Take a look on Arnold Clark's website, as we've had a number of vehicles from them over the years. Just going 6 months older can give you a better spec; compare this to this.

For £10k, have you considered that you could be driving this, this, this or this?

If you have kids, you could be driving this or this.

I think you get the message.

These have taken me 2 minutes to find (and no, I don't work for them), but they're a very difficult company to beat!

    Hi
I work in a library and will be down to only my contracted hours for next 2 years and then - well who knows?? My husband is currently away and returns in March so will hopefully add to the household income. ( He cannot currently )

I bought a 1yr old Fiesta Zetec last year and it now has 13600miles on the clock. I bought this outright with some money left to me by a relative - so no finance to pay off.

I have been offered a a new Fiesta Zetec with all the extras I have on my current car - but which will cost only £85 per month for 2 years - and Ford give £2,650 cash back in a cheque so can put this in a separate account and set up direct debit so no extra cost to me for 2 years at all - apart from servicing which I have paid for on service plan but not yet had to have a service on my current car.

My current car had to have 2 new tyres a couple of months ago and the rear 2 are only just ok - soon need replacing - plus the electric window device had to be seen to recently too.

I will reach retirement age at the end of this year and will get a small lump sum of a couple of thousand so am really tempted by this offer - I have never owned a new car but I see this as an opportunity not to have to pay until the end of the 2yr contract when I can either give the car back or pay off that still owing or start another "rolling contract" if we still have need of a car and my husband should then be in work of some kind.

I just wonder how I can maybe "haggle" or if this too good to be true 2 year payment by the supposed "cash back" is pulling the wool over my eyes??

    Comments please????

Wendy, you have so many 'if's'.
And all of this is based on what the companies exploit to get anyone to buy new.
As you say "I have never owned a new car"

What is SO nice about a new car? 3 months later its a 3 month old car. At the end of 2 yrs its a 2 yr old one which you have paid through the teeth for. Businesses aside (as this is a tax thing)

There are some advantages to NEW but in reality you pay through the nose for a semi peace-of-mind.
OK you get warranty .... but if the manufacturer is doing their job half right then why would this be needed?
You can get the changeable items 'thrown in' (brakes, tyres??) but what do these really cost?

As Andygb said "Is it a realistic aim to "keep a car for life". With some exceptions (like being diagnosed terminally ill or buying a 'classic' as a hobby).

Cars are just so unpredictable. You don't really know what that car will start costing in 5 yrs or 10 yrs and having owned it from new won't make much difference (they were all new once).

However this scheme looks different they are only doing it to make more money from YOU.
