Ever worth getting a new car?

Been looking at Fiestas, couple of years old, no more than 30k on the clock and am looking to pay £8k upwards.

Just been on Ford website, appears I can get a brand new one for just over £10k.

Is it ever worth the forecourt loss?

Not normally and don't forget the headline £10k price on their website will be for the most basic model (hardly any extras, 3 door instead of 5 etc, no alloys, flat paint). For a decent spec model your looking at £13k plus.

Its likely the used ones will already be specced up with the original owner taking the hit on the all the extras and extra trim level.

Only if you really want an exact car in an exact spec. Failing that, buy a pre-reg'd.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

So who buys them?! Doesn't seem like it's ever a good idea but obviously they get sold!

Where is the best place to buy a used car? Dealer?

    Are they same spec?
If the website cost is FROM 10k then its probably the most basic model....
also it might include taking their finance option!

Perhaps for some people the deals with insurance might actually make it worth it but that ALL assumes the choice is between a couple of years old and new..... and your intended future for the car!

i.e. When are you going to sell, will it be private or PX..... will it be based on miles or time or when it starts costing????

How much are you willing to lose on a car both in total and per year/mile you drive.

Buying the paper copy of parkers (or similar) and then calculate what each will cost you in certain time periods.... and see if that is worth it to YOU.

Actually - there was another thread of a Merc vs Gold TDI...

Your question is 'is it worth it' but there are 2 questions....
    1) What will it cost
    2) Is that worth it for you

What is the total cost for the NEW one, what will it be worth off the forecourt and what will it be worth to YOU.

My personal observation is a NEW car is new for a couple of months (owner perspective) then its just another car. i.e If you got a 2 yr old in 3 months would you feel there was ANY difference to YOU.

I tend to buy older cars for my budget range. ie a bigger more expensive car thats a bit older instead of newer.

Most of all (like anything in life really) try and buy something that the appeal will continue thus preventing you wanting to change car!

My OH has the Honda (you read before) .... I try and rejoice in its load lugging capability, reasonable MPG and comfort. If toddler pukes/drops food/puts mud on it I thank the fact I got leather seats.... drive to mums (600 miles round trip) at XMAS and rejoice it never needs any work and is economical....and we can fit everything we need in the boot without blocking the back window!

Get overtaken by boy racer and smile at how much fuel they are using and how much insurance they are paying...

You have to obviously find these things for yourself on your choice but my advice is make them durable!! That way you continue thinking your car was such a good investment and feel happy... and that after all is a big plus in life!

Only you can really say if brand new or even 1-2 yrs old is 'worth it' to you.

    Erm... perhaps?
it's not that obvious they do in any numbers!

Perhaps the ad is there to drag you in then you have the pram and they point out a 5 door would be more suitable and perhaps with the impending digital switchover the DAB radio and .....

I'm sure you get the picture !
  • ive order a brandew new VW polo with added mulitfunction steering wheel and satnav/radio system.

its costing me £14k on a plan where i pay monthly for 3 yrs then can upgrade for a new one so i never have to pay for MOT :)

Or i can decide to carry on paying and keep the car or even hand the car back and i owe nothing.

Its up to you really...but if your looking at new cars make sure you look around.

I got a deal where i dont pay tax or insurance for a yr (get it for free from vw) and then they paid £1k towards my deposit.

ive always had old cars and theyve always had issures that i just cant keep fixing.. this will be my first new car so im looking forward to the new warranty and no MOT bills :D

I bought a brand new car, just because I could.

And when a friend asked if I got a good finance deal I told him I paid cash.

The look on his face was worth it.

All sounds a bit boastful ... like that Harry Enfield brummy character.

Re. new vs. used it depends on a number of factors such as your annual mileage, size of car required, your own standard of car care and the premium that you place on reliability. The bigger the annual mileage, the smaller the car needed, the better that you tend to treat your cars and the more you value reliability then the more sense it makes to buy new.

If you want a new car with the warranty that is fine. I certainly wouldn't be arranging a second hand car for my mother or MIL they want a new car that no one else has had a chance to mess with.

I have had 3 new cars in my life a company car and two lease cars. There is a lot to be said for the ease of new cars.

In the days of my youth I used to spend a lot of time under bonnets and that was fine but the appeal of sitting on the wet gravel changing brake pads etc does wear off over the years.

I bought a new fiesta in 2001. I'd have to say it was probably the best car I owned. I got six years out of it with virutally no repair bills, other than standard servicing, a tyre here and there...
