Can anyone who has freeview or an equivalent tell me if they are still able to receive sky news and sky sports news as part of the channel list. Cheers.

Also, i take it freeview is exactly that; free, right? Is it just the cost of a digital box that i would have to shell out for?
Plus, what's the service like? Anyone had any problems?

Thanks again for any help and advice.

They might not be there much longer though:

you need to be in a freeview area https://www.freeview.co.uk and have a good signal, preferably from a roof mounted wideband aerial to get all channels without breakup.

Oh, it seems Sky are being really awkward and stingy lately. Still, who knows how long it will take???

Part of the reason for this thread is that i'm looking to cut the cost of my bb, tv and phone bill (currently £56 a month), and some people in this house (not me) were really peeved about the loss of the Sky channels from Virgin. So if i do decide to leave them, the freeview box could be one of the ways i could get those channels back.

How much are boxes these days and is there much to chose between them with regards quality?

Have you called Virgin about it, ask for retentions department see what deal they will do you, you will probably come out with 3 for £30 and a enhance channel package
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

I'm about to do it very soon (if they are open at this time). If not i'll call tomorrow.

I'm just making sure i have enough info about all the deals out there as possible. As i'm not just calling to get a better deal just for the sake of it, unless they do offer me a good one there is a very good chance i will actually leave - especially as the football season is coming to an end.

If i got a freeview box, that would sort out some of the channels, but i also want Skysports. Is the only way i can get that by subscribing to SKY or Virgin?

I have just been browsing the "Freeview boxes sub £20 - Can you beat it?" thread on this site.

    At the lowest price range i have seen the following;

Digi Home DV940B Interactive Set Top Box. £20 (Argos)

    Medion MD29292 £18 (Medionshop online)

Has anyone bought (and therefore has an opinion) of one of these boxes or similar. If so, plese give your feedback here.
I guess i just want a cheap freeview box with the minimal amout of problems and one that won't conk out within several weeks/months of buying it.

Make sure you check that you can actually receive freeview.

I have had a number of boxes and the only one that was ever problematic was a Philips. The most expensive one too.
We all evolve - get on with it
  • if you have the sky box already then you can receive freesat (similar to freeview, but some different channels) cos it comes from Sky, via your dish & sky box. you may need to get a different viewing card from sky, I didn't have a viewing card at all cos I inherited the box with my new house and I had to pay £20 for a card.

They keep sending me offers as well, in Feb I got the full package free and just this week they've offered me the full package free for 3 months plus £50 of M&S vouchers :T
