NEWNET questionable tactics

After 8x years of loyal subscription to Newnet Broadband(many at £18.00 per month ) we recently terminated our contract and switched to BT when we moved house.
Not only did Newnet charge me a 2x month termination penalty but they also terminated my email account access instantly despite the fact that I had paid until the end of January 2013 in advance of termination.
Basically it cost me approx £43.00 to terminate my contract !? despite the fact that my ininital contract was a monthly one with no termination penalty.
I was told there was nothing they could do about accessing my emails and to write a letter of complaint should I wish to.
Why are Companies like Newnet allowed to get away with these ,at best questionable ,at worse dishonest treatment of their customers ?
Presumably because they know that they can get away with it because it is too time consuming and costly to try to do anything about it.
rant over:(
