over £150 in credit can I get my money back?

I am currently with EDF and I am over £150 in credit and building credit every month. I pay £50 a month but most I have ever used is £37 in a month (only used about £14 a month during the warmer months). It seems rediculous as all I am doing is building credit and I really can't afford to be paying out far more than I am actually using. I contacted EDF but they will not review this until June at which point I expect I will be around £250 in credit. I need to do something about this. Is there any way to get them to refund some of my credit or force them to lower my direct debit to use what I am in credit?? Any advice appreciated

  • What would happen if you just stopped your direct debit for a couple of months?

It doesn't seem fair that they are holding on to your money until the warmer times of the year.

If you are in credit in the winter time you'll be in credit even more in the Summer.

Is there not a way of asking the bank to limit how much can be taken from your bank? It seems like they have too much control.

You can't 'cap' a DD-the whole point is that it can be varied! You either leave it in place or cancel it, which will of course result in the loss of your DD discount.
Are you sure that you are really still building credit based on actual winter consumption? What was the last billing date? Once your winter quarter bill comes, you may find thtat much of your credit has been used.

Hiya, you pay £50 per month so DD. Only use £37 duel fuel a month.
You must be a very low user or have solar power.

You can ask for a refund of money by cheque.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

From the EDF DD Q&As website. Here

"We will automatically credit your bank or building society account with a refund at your annual review if your credit balance is over £150 or more. However you can still contact our team at anytime to discuss your account balance."
  • I am paying and being billed each month based on my meter readings. My usage is low as I live alone in a very small flat in a new build development that is rarely cold and I am very concious of my usage. As I am billed monthly based on my readings my usage is accurate. My highest bill at £37 was during the really cold period in November and I am definietly still builign credit based on my last bill.

Thank you for this :). I contacted EDF having read this statement and they told me that they would not review it until June at the end of my year with them. So much for an automatic credit...

I think EDF make up the rules as they go on, the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing! Chances are if you call back tomorrow you'll receive a totally different response! What was your balance at your last review, was it still >£150?

If you are that much in credit and it's increasing monthly then IMHO you certainly have a good case to reduce your monthly DD amount; this is I suppose the meaning of the statement above "However you can still contact our team at anytime to discuss your account balance"

It does say 'at your annual review' so if June is your annual review date, that is when they will do it automatically. ;)
