I thought there was a cooking/recipe section in this forum but there isnt (unless im blind) so im sticking this thread here.
Anyway
Deep fried Pizza quite common in scotland, basically chippys use cheap frozen pizza and basically fry it and serve it with chips covered in brown sauce with salt and vinegar.
Its lovely, and full of fat and high calories aka heart attack food.
ive yet to find this here in England.
anyways, when i was young i remember my mum trying to make this, but when we fried the cheap frozen pizza (cheese and tomato) all the topping kinda melted off the pizza.
so does anyone know how to deep fry a pizza (without batter as thats different)? how do the scottish chippys do it? do they put something on the pizza before it goes in the fryer?
but more importantly, where in England can you find this? why dont english chippys do this? whats wrong with them?
all comments about the pizza supper with lots of brown sauce being rank will be ignored.
ta muchly.

If the topping melted then the oil temperature was too low, the pizza was not frozen or you placed too big a piece of pizza in too small a fryer.
Basically there are 2 ways it is done either the whole pizza is dropped in the fryer or it is cut/snapped in half the topped sides are pressed together facing each other & then that is dropped in the fryer. The pizza must not have extra toppings as they will break loose.
You need to bear in mind a commercial fryer has a very large capacity so adding a whole frozen pizza is not going to cause a significant drop in oil temperature whereas a domestic deep fat fryer has a relatively small capacity so it would have to be cooked in smaller pieces or it would cause too big a drop in oil temperature & the exterior of the pizza would not seal properly resulting in a gooey mess & wrecking your oil.
A pizza crisp (frozen pizza dipped in batter then fried) would probably work better in a domestic fryer as the batter should seal instantly when it is added to the fryer holding everything in place although that would not be dripping with fat as the batter would act as a barrier to keep that out.
As for why chippies don't sell it, it doesn't exactly sound appealing and there would probably be a very limited market for such an item so it is not likely to appear on menus anytime soon. Some chip shops may do it upon request others will look at you like you are crazy if you ask for it.0 -
Your'e exactly the kind of unhealthy eater that the NHS campaign Change4Life is aimed at.

There's are reasons why Scotland has a lower life expectancy than England in places like Glasgow..
Deep-fried pizza is rank, gross and probably as unhealthy as deep-fried Mars bars.0 -

Couldn't agree more. What a vile thing to want to eat. Bad enough that you can buy deep fried pizza let alone that you would want to make it at home.0 -

I need to go to Scotland and eat some fried stuff. Round here, the chippies are so boring........"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

yes. you can find it in almost every scottish chippy, just wondering why you cant get it here (in england...maybe you can..but where???)
i appreciate its not healthy food but neither is fish and chips, donner kebabs, burgers, mcdonalds, pizza hut, kfc, and few others i could mention.
Thanks to frugal shopper for his/her reply, it was a smallish pizza in a small standard fryer at home so i guess the oil wasnt hot enough. im going to try it again though.
for those that havent tried it, next time you go to scotland, TRY ITyou might like it! (then perhaps go on a diet for a month to burn of the calories) but you must have it with brown sauce.
Thanks0 -
