Numbers 2 and 3 contradict each other. Do calories matter or not?

People should drink the amount of water they need. A sedentry person will require less water than an active person. Heat conditions will also affect the amount needed. Listen to your body, not other people spouting figures at you.

You can disagree all you like, that's the great thing about opinions. I disagree too. It's more like 90%/10%.

Lifting weights is not 'crap exercise'. It's intense and explosive. It develops bone strength and more importantly for fat loss, builds more muscle which in turn takes more energy for them to function. This will boost your growth hormone which adds to an increase in your metabolism resulting in you burning more fat.

You shouldn't be offering advice without having some basic knowledge.

Looks like someone missed the part where I said "LIGHT" weights. Please read in future before commenting :)

"Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels"- (Kate Moss)

After losing 3lbs in 2 weeks by cutting out the booze and fast food, eating sensibly and every 3 hours, and going to the gym 3 times a week and walking an hour a day I know EXACTLY what she means.
    Good old Kate.

(of course being skinny is not healthy either so don't take the quote too literally but it's good to remember and say out loud when you fancy a big mac :))

And you are apparently now a student in London rather than Scotland???

I enjoy a pint of beer each night for it's health benefits. The other pints are for my witty comebacks and flawless dance moves.

I would modify that to my own one: nothing tastes as good as something that is earnt. Nothing tastes as good as when you know that you can treat yourself because you've done so much exercise :p

Kate's is easier to remember though.

Since carbs make up about 50% of most people's calorific intake, of course cutting them down will lead to weight loss. Cutting the carbs and replacing them with equal amounts of fat wouldn't. Cutting carbs, fat and protein to fit in a reasonable calorie-controlled diet would work. It's not the case that cutting carbs has been proven to do anything above and beyond what you'd expect from simply controlling calories.

How people want to portion out their calories for the day is pretty much up to them. There's a wide range of possibilities there and what seems to matter most is controlling calories.

    Yes it would.

Insulin is required to carry excess glucose out of the bloodstream and store it in adipose tissue, ie fat. By eating fat, and to a large degree protein, insulin levels are not sufficiently raised as very little fat breaks down into glucose. Therefore any excess can't be stored around the body as fat.

It is the case that cutting carbs has been proven to be the most effective method for fat loss. The bodies actual requirement for carbohydrate is zero. The eyes, and a part of the brain does need glucose. But the body can get this from fat and protein.

Controlling calories will work for some people. However, eating 2,500cals a day of carbs, or 2,500cals a day of fat and protein would give 2 massively different results over the set period in the favour of fat and protein.

Sorry, yes I did miss that part.

However, there is still a place for lifting lighter weights in a healthy exercise regime. You don't have to be straining or breaking PB's all the time.

And what about the rest of my reply?

In the 50 greatest diet and exercise myths, shown on channel 5 recently a woman nutritionist said we should NOT be scared of eating fat and indeed it should make up 33% of our daily calorie intake.

I think I'll go back onto semi-skimmed rather than skimmed then.

I just really wanted to tell someone that as of this morning when I weighed myself - I have now lost 3 stone!!!
I had a really unhealthy diet before I started trying to loose weight so my aim was to become healthier as well as lighter. I have acheived this in 4 months so I have had to be quite strict with myself, but because I can see and feel the results that motivates me to keep going. I love Kate Moss's quote and I agree because although i really LOVE my food I actually love feeling slimmer more! I was actually inspired by the Hairy Dieters as they are total "foodies" so if they can do it anyone can. Some of their recipes are great and you can get them free online - the curry is lush!
I would also say try not to deprive yourself of everything you love because then you are more likely to fall off the diet wagon. I bought some thin gingerbread biscuits (25cals each) and if I really want something sweet I have just one of those and that helps me feel better. Likewise I have a packet of weightwatchers crinkle crisps if I am craving crisps. Having a little of what you like of something not too naughty can sometime just keep you going and prevent you from gorging.
I want to lose another 1 1/2 stone to get within the healthy BMI range. Hopefully I will get to my goal for summer then I can buy some lovely new clothes to show off the new slimmer me! Good luck to everyone who is trying to lose weight - its tough but we can all do it!
