Help with HTC Desire

Options
Hi

I have spent all evening on this and am now at my wits end with it. I have a HTC desire and have bought a new Samsung Galaxy phone. I want to copy my contacts from my old phone to my new one but it is proving a nightmare. The HTC does not allow me to copy contacts to the SIM card.

I have tried copying them to the SD card and then to my google account but they are not showing in my google contacts. I have tried syncing my phone with my laptop but HTC Sync will only allow me to copy contacts from the computer to the phone and not the other way round. I have saved the contacts file from my SD card to my computer but google will not import the file and will not import individual contacts.

I cannot believe that this is such a difficult thing to do - can anyone help? Have I missed a step or is this really a much more difficult task than it needs to be?

OK in the Desire have you check the sync options to allow Google to upload your contacts to Googles servers?
Check "settings" then "Accounts & Sync"
Look for your google account (make sure auto-sync and background data are ticked!)
Select it and make sure "Sync Contacts" is ticked (you should also see the time the last successful sync happened!)

Wait 5 or 10 mins till the small spinning arrows finally stop and check your google contacts:

    Now
Move the sim over to the new phone and power it up, or just power it up without a sim and use WiFi...

Log into your Google account and afre a few mins it should automatically sync your contacts to your new phone.

No need for a PC or syncing with the cloud.
Install, make a backup on your external SD card, transfer backup file to new handset, then restore the backup.

Thanks - I hadn't thought to check the sync options (Doh!) and it seems to have worked now. Haven't tried with new phone yet but at least I've got all the numbers in google contacts.

I feel such a doofus! Thanks for the advice.

Crispy, what Samsung did you go for? I'm thinking of replacing my Desire after three years of faithful service and I'm looking at the Galaxy Note 2.

  • The new contacts should automagically arrive if they're in your Google account

I was shocked how much automatically installed when I started up my Sammy Galaxy S3 (fifer, it's a bloody good phone)

Thanks ringo. I keep swithering between the SIII and the Note 2.

Well, depends on whether you're in need of a big screen + pen or not.

    I just got this delivered:

Amazing.. lets you plug USB devices into your phone. I just tried a memory stick, followed by a wireless mouse. Very odd to see a pointer appear on your phone. My plan is to add a USB SD card reader so I can view/send photos from my camera whilst i'm out and about

It's called 'USB OTG - On the go'

I went for the Galaxy S2. The Desire has been driving me insane with lack of internal memory so I'm looking forward to having a play with this one - once I've sorted the contacts out!

A couple of my colleagues have the S2 and speak very highly of it. The Desire was great to start with but it can be a bit clunky to use at times and the memory issues are really frustrating. I've also heard good things about Samsung tablets.

Way behind you guys but have just inherited a Wildfire. Have just dropped a 32GB SHDC card in it and I have spare capacity yippee.

My old phone was even clunkier and would only accept 8GB.

I wish I had known about the transfer option because 3 phones were replaced in the family and they all took ages to manually move contacts as the sim is smaller on the new phones as well.
