Oh that's awful, has it been confirmed as the cause, might be worth posting in the pet section http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=143

It's only just happened, we couldn't get them to the vet in Time nothing else has changed either for them and both were strong healthy birds, were totally heartbroken

I don't want to worry you, but a friend of mind had 4 birds (2 Budgies & 2 Finches) die very suddenly like this, but the cause was not what they had eaten but carbon monoxide poisoning. Their deaths probably saved his life.

If you have a CO monitor, I'd make sure it is working properly:if not, CO detecting strips only cost a couple of pounds from any hardware shop. It would give you peace of mind, if nothing else.

  • I'm really sorry for the sad loss of your much loved pets. As Shovel Lad suggested please do check this ASAP - you can't smell carbon monoxide or have any sense it's there and it can literally kill you whilst you are sleeping.

We thankfully owned a digital carbon monoxide alarm when we were in a rental property and I awoke to hear an alarm but realised it wasn't the smoke alarm...it had registered a few parts per million I think was how it was measured so at that level it would only have caused us bad headaches, but had it built up without us knowing or given off larger amounts the alarm would have saved our lives and that of our baby son who was more vulnerable.

The cause in our case was overgrown bushes around the boiler flue (is that how you spell it-anyway the vent to the outside). It was terrifying not knowing whether the figure on the screen meant we were about to pass out etc. and so I had to ventilate the property and get my son to safety until the engineer came.

Please get it checked ASAP and ensure all appliances (heaters, boilers etc that could cause it are switched off and rooms ventilated until the can be checked)-it sounds harsh but it is known as the 'silent killer' and if it is carbon monoxide that has already taken the lives of your pets it may be at a significant level already.

Please take care, thinking of you and please keep us updated-anyone else reading this who doesn't have a carbon monoxide alarm I would urge you to get one to protect your family too xx

P.S. Argos have 25% off all their alarms at the moment, although other places may be more competitive:

Thanks so much sl and mb I started being violently sick with a banging headache and felt awful. Cut a long story short ended up with an ambulance fire engine, heart team and national grid, evacuated neighbour.

Boiler cut off now, waiting for it to be checked. Woke up thinking it was time to wake the birds up, it's awful without them

Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention though, I hope. Can find out what happened xx
