I've also been told it's good to let it run empty every month or so, so as not to create too much crap in the bottom of tank.

That isn't good at all. Any crap that is at the bottom of the tank will get pulled through to the filters, pump and engine, possibly blocking them up.

A couple of years ago I had a hire car for work, which had to be returned to the hire company full. If it wasn't full, they charged an extortionate amount to fill it up. I filled it to the click and then handed it back to the hire company. It seems that the tank wasn't full and they charged me an extra £11 (I think) which I couldn't claim back on expenses because I had 'breached the hire agreement'. An expensive mistake! So, when I have a hire car now I ignore the click and fill it all the way up.

However, with my own car I fill to the click.

I know a lot of people who fill to the 'brim'. ie. they can see the petrol at the top of the filler pipe.

Not a good idea because on a hot day, the fuel expands and ends up leaking out through the overflow.

Absolutely correct. Some years ago filled a petrol vehicle to brim with fuel left it parked in full sun. After about 6 hours it was forced out of overflow and then continued to siphon out. Not sure if this can happen with modern vehicles because most if not all have a sealed system once the filler is replaced.

When the filling nozzle clicks it means there is pressure against the flow of fuel into the tank, this usually means the tank is just about full, if you wait a few seconds you can usually get a bit more in. Why bother! it will only be at most 1/2 a litre, and if you park up after this it will expand in the tank and my well leak out as previously stated.

Waiting for a pump last week in the petrol station watching the guy in front fill up. He hit the click, but kept pulling the nossel out a bit more and trying again and again. What he couldnt see, but I could was that the more he tried to jam in the more was pouring out of the breather pipes onto the floor. Plonker.

I always stop at the first click

depends how i'm paying. If i'm paying by card i'll fill to the click. If i'm paying cash i'll try and round it off so i'm not hit with a pocket full of change.

I wasn't aware this could happen, is it standard with all vehicles now? :o

I think all cars have to have some kind of breather pipe mechanism or else if you left you car parked in the heat I guess it could go bang?

doubt it, loads of times you get the clicks when you've put hardly any petrol in. Think it's just a myth myself.
