You can bet on it. These days role models do not have to be people who apparently occupy a higher plane of human existence to those who admire them. They just need to appear frequently in celeb mags and be someone that the punters can identify with.

I am led to understand that Katy Price is a major role model for young teenage girls.

Oh dear ... people need to have higher expectations of themselves .... then again these 'role' models are'nt exactly on the breadline so who is the mug?
  • i don't know why people have such a downer on Wonga and the like. they offer a service, they are up front on the apr and fees. if stupid chavs want to take out these loans then it is up to them - people need to take responsibility for their actions. It is unreal.
I have never taken out one of these loans - why? because i think the interest is too high and i can get the money cheaper if i need to.
If i couldn't get the money cheaper, then i would have to decide to take it or leave it. the end. it is not Wonga's fault.

I dunno, if your aim is to want fewer people on benefits (which should be everyone's aim) then companies like Wonga are bad news because they undoubtedly put lots of people in lifelong debt they'll never get out of. Most of those people were too stupid to understand how interest rates worked & what they were signing up to.

You can argue that it's their own fault & therefore tough but the reality is that in very many cases it won't be them paying Wonga, it'll be the taxpayer.

    So personally I hate Wonga!
  • if wonga loan the money to someone and that person can't pay it back, then wonga don't get paid. the tax payer doesn't pay it for them.

if you mean the tax payer via the loanee's benefits, then possibly - but frankly if you take out these loans, your benefits should be cut off. same as if you smoke or drink.

The trouble is that I bet if the dozy chav on welfare defaults with Wonga then the taxpayer ends up paying for it. I'd be amazed if anyone on serial welfare ever got banged up for debts in such a way. The do-gooders will protect them as always.
No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

Nobody goes to jail for debts unless council tax and the like. Wonga can go spin for lending stupidly, all the person has to do is say I cant pay this and buy food then they can take years to pay it off without threat of high interest.
Pretty sure this is why we allow wonga or others, you might call them loanshark but they are on a leash and are forced to be reasonable if people cant pay. Generally I agree with that mixed freedom to operate

Wont do peoples credit rating much good but there is no eternal debt and endless interest. As well as debt offers there is an equal spew of adverts for debt negotiation firms, both awful but rather people borrow then steal

I guess nobody is going to have any sympathy with Wonga and the like if they get stung by defaulters, but no doubt their overall rates are enough to cover it, and I still would not be shocked if loan companies did back door lobbying in Whitehall to try to get such debts repaid out of welfare if necessary.

how does this attitude square with your paternalistic rant that poor people shouldn't be allowed to spend benefits on cigs & alcohol?
