Exchange is fibre enabled, but my line isn't?

  • That BT checker says yes to fibre on that checker using my postcode ,but then changes its mind and says no, once I get to putting my phone number in the order.

Also just come across a doc from BT for fibre roll outs in Dec 2011.. My postcode is listed on it twice. One says FTTP deployed to 93% of lines, and the other says FTTP deployed to 6% of lines. Does this mean that I'm in the 1% of my town that can't get fibre!?

    Probably.

I work for an ISP and fibre provision is still a little hit and miss - and just because that junction box is at the end of your road doesn't mean it serves your property. You could have another at the other end, or concealed somewhere.

    Annoying.
  • Very annoying, indeed! Just checked a neighbours number in the BT infinity checker, same postcode, their line is capable of 160mb! Looks like I chose the wrong house to move into! lol

Is there an easy way to find out which cabinet runs my line?

    You could try emailing Openreach:
On very rare occasions the deployment of a superfast fibre broadband cabinet can be affected by a number of issues. Typically these are : 1. Our underground duct routes are congested
    2. There are utility cables where we want to lay ours
    3. We have been unable to agree a suitable location with your local authority
    4. The costs of providing electrical power have become excessive and meant the cabinet is no longer economic to deploy in that location.

We are sorry that you may have to wait a number of months in some cases for a solution. If you require further information please email us at nga.enquiries@openreach.co.uk. Please note that we will not be in a position to comment on whether your area will get superfast fibre broadband in the future if not yet published on our “Where and When” rollout plan, or deal with questions about a live service which should be made to your Communications Provider.

FTTP is fibre to the premises, most of the posts here refer to FTTC fibre to the cabinet, the green boxes shown in the photos,if your home is very close to the exchange then you may be what's called an E/O customer..exchange only, basically your copper pair goes from your home direct to the exchange, not via a 'cabinet' and if it doesn't go via a cabinet you cannot (currently) have FTTC
  • thanks for the link, YoungNick, I think I might have to do that!

Basil, that website tells me the same as the document I was reffering to earlier. That there were 2 cabinets covering 99% of my postcode deployed for FTTP in Dec 2011. Which leads me to another question that iniltous has part answered. I now know what it stands for, but what exactly does FTTP mean?
  • Hmm, I've jut come across superfastcornwall.org, which tells me...

Great news! It's looking likely that you can get superfast fibre broadband straightaway. Please contact an Internet Service Provider for more information or to place an order.

Please note: In your area the very latest FTTP (fibre to the premises) technology is used. As this is a cutting-edge service, not all of the Internet Service Providers listed offer the service yet. Please contact us at info@superfastcornwall.org if you have issues placing an order.

I seem to have stepped into a minefield! Every checker tells me something different!
  • I had all the OR vans in my area recently and just stopped and asked the boy if they were enabling fibre for my house. Thankfully he said yes. Not got it yet, as I'm looking at the options, but my estimate speed is 35Mb. To put that in to perspective, I currently get 0.5Mb - which is absolutely criminal these days.
  • There are a lot of Openreach vans around at the moment as there are a lot of faults due to the weather so looking for vans is not a good indicator.

Go to your local cabinet and look for a second cabinet nearby. Sometimes across the road or round a corner, but usually within a few feet. You will see a mark on the pavement/road where it has been dug up to lay the cable joining the 2 cabinets. This secondary cabinet is the fibre cabinet and looks like the one in the picture above. Sometimes it has that sticker, but it depends on the area,

If your cabinet doesn't have the secondary cabinet nearby then you don't have it yet.
