Just shari that the end of season bare root sale is on at Peter beales classic roses website.
Roses from there arrived in rude health last year and I was sad not to be able to buy more in autumn but lucky a few I wanted were still available in the bare root sale so made an order last night.

Thank you lir, I love Peter Beales' stand at Chelsea and was planning to get some memorial roses in memory of my parents, so managed to find both their names among the bare roots at half price, and another with a strong scent for meYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0

i've bookmarked the site with my order, but it was just a 'fantasy shop' as i can't really afford it. got about 6 in the basket when one or two is enough to add to my other two at home. thanks anyway but i've shared it on FB.0

Dog star heaven, I do huge amounts of fantasy shopping at onlinelant sellers. One day they might all make it here, but it will take a very long time.
. I have bought one rose that I know I can propogate for extensive use here in a few years.
. Others....well, my wish list just gets longer. I was thrilled to find some of them in the sale this year, but missed out on the two at the top of the list. Never mind.....next year, the year after.....one day

here are the ones that i got in the basket, LinR:
Louise Odier
Everest Double Fragrance
Gertrude Jekyll (Ausbord)
Guin!e
La Reine Victoria
which are all "heavily scented", good for bees and are doubles.
What I ideally want are "antique roses" that are sold as cut flowers. They're patented in a way so the breeders know they can cream off more money as opposed to gardeners growing it themselves. Have a google and you'll see they're very 'in' atm in wedding bouquets. But they have the most wonderful rose colours where you have hues of beiges/dusky pinks/greys/lilacs ('Amnesia' and 'Memory Lane' and there was another one which I can't quite remember). Not sure which ones I smelt was wonderful but I was heady with their beauty, I couldn't leave the florist (I was in London at the time and haven't seen them since). At home, I'm growing 'Lady Emma Hamilton' and 'Rhapsody in Blue' (no space for more at home as the latter is on the lotti!)
Which ones are you coveting, LinR?0 -
It's not a Peter Beales, but one from Harkness had an amazing scent at Chelsea, everyone was commenting on the scent from the stand but it was mainly Chandos Beauty - I am not a pink person but could be tempted by herYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0

Louise odier and la reine Victoria are both lovely roses IMO.Guinee is a trooper. I have never been into red roses tbh, but started a couple of years ago. I have to say the one that excites me most is my Ena Harkness. Huge, awesomely fragrant blooms. Highgrove has been a trooper too. I cannot wait till the gypsy boy I have flowers. He was too lazy to bother last miserable summer, it's first year here, but it's put on tremendous growth so I am hoping for a something from it this year.

Peter beales sell a lot of other people's roses and have a huge back stock. They are discontinuing the David austins they sold, to concentrate on their new rose breeding programme ( an old fashion type like the austin roses). In any case, it's worth checking to see if it's available as a bareroot more cheaply from beales ATM than at harkness. Fwiw I bought the Harkness Joie de vivre last wonter, and since summer, she has barely stopped flowing. It's even blooming now, albeit a different colour in this weather. Very impressive little rose.0 -
is the Joire de Vivre or Chandos Beauty a repeat flowerer or has a long flowering period? As a long-time lover of roses but last year, I decided I'd make more effort to growing more, I'm interested whether these types of flowering types are worth getting as I like to get my money's worth for paying for a particular variety name!0

Joie de vivre flowers repeating through the season...and as I have found, beyond. She is small front of the border rose.0 -
Thanks Lostinrates, they had the Tuscany superb I have been looking for and just have room to squeeze in my garden. Don't know where I'm going to fit in the other two I couldn't resist!0
