Obviously all his mail goes there, it's his house! I can't expect him to change it, he won't. But I need to use his house temporarily & will have to inform HMRC. Is it a risk I'll just have to take?

Why can't he do a temporary redirection of his post - he'll presumably want to receive it regularly rather than just on the odd occasion when he happens to see you?

It could happen when you ring, it could happen while your there, it might happens ages afterwards. All it takes is a doubt, someone to report you, or some questions not answered correctly and they might.

Thank you. But it won't be on their computer screen when I ring & change the address? I'd need to be looked into? Just trying to gauge if it would be best to explain to them it's ex's property or just keep quiet and hope they won't look into me until I'm back home.

Never thought of that? He picks our little one up twice a week so I just assumed he'd pick it up on the Tuesday & Friday that he does.

its not hard to change address... one call to TCO changes address on TC and CB. but your not moving home, and your MAIN address will still be your mums... you simply need to tell them the circumstances, and they may say "no change is needed".

you will also need to inform any other benefit offices. CB needs notiying of any change that you know will last longer than 8 weeks.

i dont *think* that car insurance needs notifying... as they ask you what your main address is, but obviously also where your car is kept etc. if your move chances where your car is stored, any theft cover could be void... etc... (my motorcycle policy states that if my bike is not locked in garage and it gets stolen within a mile of my home (day or night) no cover is provided - also that if the lock on it is not on it when its stolen no cover is provided.)

car insurance states that if it isnt parked on driveway at night no cover is added for damage/theft (despite driveway having no gates... but its easier for a car to sideswipe a car on the road etc... and its more common in different areas)

this may cost you an admin fee for car insurance. note also, if you change address of insurance, ensure you change address of v5 and driving license. my dad gave me an old car for next to nothing. he wasnt sure of my address so simply put his address on the v5 etc. i didnt change the address, had a claim where somebody nicked my sound system ETC out of it... and it went horribly wrong when i came to claim - they wanted a copy of v5, and the address was different to insurance address... they refused to pay out.
and apparently wasnt insured whilst driving it either...? despite it being insured and my car in my name etc.

these are things some people dont realise... and can have very negative consequences.

4 months doesnt seem like a long time... but still. better safe than sorry...

Hi, I rang the tax credits before regarding childcare & mentioned I may be temporarily be changing address for about 4 months & if I did what should I do, they said just ring them & child benefit separately, and let them know again when I moved back home.

Thank you for the info re- car insurance.

So there's nothing I can do if they decide to look into my claim whilst I'm temporarily living there? I just need to hope that they don't?

So there's nothing I can do if they decide to look into my claim whilst I'm living there, I can't prove we are not a couple? Surely the likelihood of me being checked in those 4 months is fairly slim?

Just wanted to bump this thread.

I am due to move to ex's property at end of next month and i'm terrified, renewal date is coming up for tax credits soon, so i need to inform HMRC otherwise i will miss my renewal letter (my permanent home address is very far from ex's) i'm going to put myself on his council tax bill (i have to i think?) and inform HMRC of my temporary change of address (regarding my tax return, national insurance, child benefit & child tax credits)

All bills will stay in ex's name, mortgage is in his name, his tax returns obviously get sent to his address so HMRC know he lives there. It's too much hassle to move all his bills etc..

It is for 4 months and 3 weeks (the move) i will then be back at my mum's address and will inform HMRC & council tax that I have moved back home.

Shall I tell them all of this, that it's ex's property but he's not living there? If i don't, is the only way that they will know it's his property, is if they do a credit check? I'm hoping that won't be highly likely in that 4 months and 3 weeks.

If they do a check, what will happen? I have to pay 4 months and 3 weeks worth of tax credits back? Or will i be prosecuted?

As stated in reply #1 you will need to inform them of a change of circumstances (address).

You will have to answer questions on the arrangement here. As I stated in early december it all sounds a bit wierd.

How are you able to carry on working if your new address is so far away from your mum's house?

When I rang them to inform them that I would temporarily be moving address, they didn't ask any questions, they said "that's fine, just ring us when you move in and ring us back when you move out and go back to your permanent address" so I don't think they will ask questions. They didn't when I moved to my mums 2 years ago.

kelpie my clients are willing to follow me, it's not a million miles away, plus I'll do a few mobile appointments to those not willing to follow.
